UPS Management

Postby spookt » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:43 am

Hi Folks

Does anyone know how DSM manages a UPS ? I just waiting for my APC to arrive. When it gets here it will supply my DS411j plus a Linux box and my router. I'd like the Linux box to do a graceful shutdown when the battery gets low. I know the DiskStation will, but is there a way I can pass the low battery message to the Linux server?

I'm aware of apcupsd for linux which supports a server/slave mode where one machine connected to the UPS can act as a server and signal slaves of UPS events. Does DSM support this? I guess I can attempt to build a version for DSM but if there's similar functionality already it would save some time.

Cheers
Paul

It should work with the DS as master, and a PC with a NUT client installed, as a slave.
I tested this (and it worked with my DS; UPS, see signature), using this information (for Windows):
http://www.gadgetvictims.com/2010/02/ba ... -home.html

Some additional info:
Location ups.conf and upsd.users: /usr/syno/etc/ups/
In ups.conf (nothing changed) you will see the name of the ups (strangely enough: 'ups')
[ups]
driver = usbhid-ups
port = auto

In upsd.users I added a user: monuser2. (Don't know if this is necessary, but I didn't want to change anything for the default user)
[monuser]
password = secret
upsmon master
[monuser2]
password = mylittlesecret
upsmon slave

And, for Windows users:
In the WinNUT configuration tool I added this to the configuration file:
MONITOR ups@192.168.xxx.xxx 1 monuser2 mylittlesecret slave
(IP address is of course the LAN IP of the DS).
Settings configuration tool: same as in link.
[Added line]: After that, choose 'Apply and start WinNUT' in the WinNUT configuration tool.

And yes: you also need to connect the power of the router to the UPS :wink:
[Edit]: Mods in these config files will be overwritten on a FW update.

Thanks, that looks to be excellent info. I hadn't come across NUT before but it looks like this will do the job perfectly! Thanks.

Hi :)
Im trying to get it to work with my OSX Lion computer as client.
I got NUT installed by macports, looks like its running, but offcause I get an error then I try to start it:

Code: Select all
Network UPS Tools upsmon 2.6.1
Using power down flag file /etc/killpower

Fatal error: insufficient power configured!

Sum of power values........: 0
Minimum value (MINSUPPLIES): 1

Edit your upsmon.conf and change the values.

is the "monitor" line all I need to edit? (+add an new user on the Syno side?)

I don't know if this will help anybody, but I'm running NUT on pfsense - and on the DS, I had to enable the "Enable network UPS server" checkbox, and enter the IP address of my pfsense box - and then the NUT client in pfsense connected right up for me. Perhaps that was a given, but was not included in the instructions given, so I didn't even think to look there until after I had been screwing around for a while.
