I have given up trying to configure my TP Link router (not on the EZ list) so I can access my files remotely. I simply cannot open the port on it despite following instructions to the letter. I am utterly bewildered by the array of options, and conflicting advice I have received in various forums. I simply want to plug and play!

If I get a router that is in the compatibility list so that I can use the wizard, will it really do everything for me? No faffing around with NATs and MAC addresses and inetrnal and external and static and dynamic IPs? It all sounds too goof to be true...

If it is true, can someone recommend a gigabit router with 6 ports (so I can combine the router and switch) available in the UK? Thanks.

Following on from my own post above, since I couldn't get my TP Link working, I tried a BT Home Hub 2, which is on the supported list. The Wizard didn't work with it - I got an error message relating to an external IP address.

Update: in desperation, I removed my hard drives from the NAS and installed a sinle fresh one, and started all over again. I wet through the EZ Wizard with the BT Homehub 2, which appeared to complete succesfully. However, I still cannot access over the internet. I get a Webdav 504 error, despite webdave being enabled.

Might I be jstified in assuming that the wizard does not work for this router, or that more setting need to be made that the wizard does not do automatically? Either way, the lack of support and clear guidance on this aspect of DiskStations is disappointing.

Hi Keiron, I am at the same breaking point as you - with this DiskStation I have being almost useless if not able to be accessed remotely. Seems like the port forwarding process just isnt explained properly anywhere for those without a "supported" router.

Anyone care to shed some light on the 504 error? I have both a Thompson and a Netgear DGND3300V2

Hi jhunt, I feel your pain!

My BT router is supposedly supported, but the EZ Wizard didn't work with it at all. So I might have been tempted to recommend you buy a compatible router, but as my experience shows, it may not work.

Back on my TP Link, and for no apparent reason...it started to work. I was just clicking around, exasperated, using tools like "Open Port Check Tool" and others to see whether I had been successful or not in opening the port 5005 required for my to access using my iPhone. I noticed that this tool was automatically displaying an IP address that I didn't recognise. When I put in the 192. etc address, it was telling me the port was closed (I have never been too sure what IP address I am meant to be opening the port for - the router or the NAS?)

Anyway, I tried the IP address it was displaying to me (which was totally different from the NAS address and router address, it begins with 86 or something) in the log in field on the Synology app on my iphone and hey presto, it gave me access! I'm guessing this is some sort of external IP address?

However, I am still not sure how I opened the port. In the relevant section on the router settings, I just put in loads of lines with loads of different IP addresses, asking it to open port 5005.

Now what is really frustrating, I cannot reproduce that for any other ports.

I am trying to access my audio files using the DS Audio app on my iPhone and I believe to do that I need top open port 5000, but I cannot do it.

Additionally (or maybe related), when I enter the same login details on the DS Audio app I get a message about the password being invalid.

One other thing you need to know about which I have been advised on is setting up static IP addresses. I followed these instructions here: http://portforward.com/networking/static-win7.htm
(assuming you are on W7). You also need to set up a static IP address on the NAS and I believe you do this: go to Control panel > Network > Network Interface > "User Manual configuration" and enter the IP address.(Exactly what IP address I don't know/can't remember)

So I have made some progress, but not a lot.

It is so frustrating. There's bits of advice, Wiki pages, tutorials etc but none are comprehensive.

The other major problem I have is tediously slow file transfers. I see that many Diskstation owners have problems with both of thsese issues, many threads on various forums on both these topics are just left unanswered. there are so many variables. I have thought of ditching the Synology for another brand but I'm sure the same problems will exist.

There's another bit of a snag of course. While I can log into DS File, I cannot access DS Audio.

I get the message "Account or password is invalid. Please try again".

EDIT: I've also remembered this page here: http://www.synology.com/us/support/tuto ... rnet.php#3

It's a tutorial on how to open ports. It seems to suggest (about 70% of the way down) that you can use the DSM to open ports. Whether you need to do this as well as open them on your router, I don't know. I seem to recall playing around in there...I don't know, I've spent I would guess 40 hours on the problems and made next to no progress!

Router setup when not listed ?

Postby PedroB » Thu Apr 19, 2012 1:15 pm

Hi
Just trying to setup my router (DrayTek 2800VG - not listed) for port forwarding. Have tried EZ internet and manual setup but I'm not given any option to test out my router to see if it's compatible. There's nothing like the checkbox to check, to send a compatibility report to Synology. In fact no way setup a router unless it's listed ????. I've tried the User Guide, DSM help and Synology website tutorial but these seem based on DSM 3.2 , I'm using DSM 4.0 2198, is this now very different in this area ?
How do I even begin to setup a router to get internet access to my DS212+ ?

BTW I tried selecting the nearest from the list of routers (DrayTek 2910). Was that a bad move ? Can it be deleted ?

my thanks in anticipation

OK, thanks for merging my post into this thread ... it's not really a router compatibility issue though. I'm happy to setup port forwarding on my router anyhow ... in fact it appears in DSM 4.0 2198 I had to do this directly in the router configuration, because there was no way it could be done through DSM. The following points apply:
1. Neither the EZ Internet wizard nor the 'Setup router' option in Control Panel / Router have the screen for automatically / manually attempting router port setup if you have an unlisted router. The only way I found to get past this was to select another router from the list and apply it. This made the buttons available so that I could also use 'custom account' to log into my router and setup some ports. It allows you to do this ... but probably because it's not the correct router anyhow and although you now have access to creating port setup, test connection fails. So its back to the actual router config to setup the port forwarding. After this, test connection is fine.

2. The bottom line is setup the port forwarding yourself, I couldn't find a way of getting the DSM to do it. The best advice I've read in this thread is to do that anyhow and IMHO the router list should be scrapped ... it's unnecessarily confusing.

3. I'd still like to get rid of the reference to the DrayTek 2910 that I used to get me through the process (it was the nearest to my 2800VG) but it probably doesn't matter. I strongly suspect that I didn't use the process in the way Synology developers intended but it was the only way I could find through. If this helps someone else, then good.

Finally, the more I uncover of Synology's DSM and its attendent applications, the more I become in awe of it all. This is a mightily impressive piece of work and minor glitches like I encountered above pale readily into insignificance.

works for me on DS212j, on b/g and even n, but this one is NOT a dual-band one so only 2.4Ghz

The DSM router utility is not worth trying.

However what I have found is that many routers don't really fully support port forwarding.

I had a Thompson ST585v7 which worked perfectly for years. Then I changed ISP and got a BT Home Hub 3 (type B), which also worked fine.

However due to a fault they swapped out the Home Hub 3 (type B) with a Home Hub (type A), which no long ports forward properly.

Out of desperation I tried a Netgear WNDR4500 which also failed to forward ports. I'm now waiting to get another Home Hub 3 (type B) and hope that will solve the problems.

I've never tried the router tool.

What would be constructive if there was a list of routers which have been proven to port forward successfully, that way people would be less likely to try that tool.

Just to add the BT Home Hub 3 TYPE B does seem to forward ports, my DS212j is now back online.

However anyone have any suggestions for a router that has gigabit ethernet and dual band wireless, obviously it must forward ports properly.

Though the BT HH3 type B will forward ports I've switched to a Netgear WNDR3800 which again is "compatible" as it can forward the ports.

The previous WNDR4500 has been used by others who've not had the problems with port forwarding that I had.

Any router that has user settings allowing ports to be forwarded will be "compatible".

Most that do will explain clearly how to in their user manual, check before you buy.

Bump

I'm intersted in this too, I already port forwarded as many ports as possible, but my router has 16 range max ports configurable.

Any help will be appreciated :)

I'm going to buy DS413j, and I think over the purchase of a router for it.
I see in the list of compatible ZyXEL KEENETIC, this implies compatibility with ZyXEL KEENETIC GIGA?
Or GIGA will not work with NAS?

configuration of a dlink dir-100 router via my DS213

Postby pdbl1971 » Sun Jan 06, 2013 2:09 pm

Often the community support is quicker, so I try and thank the community in advance

PDBL1971

see my problem as exposed to the support

Hello,
I try to configure automatically my dlink router model dir-100 hardware version D1 and firmware version v4.01 via my DS213 NAS.
This router is listed as supported on your support website see page http://www.synology.com/support/router.php
D-Link DIR-100 (all firmware versions)

But it doesn't appear in the menu proposed by my DS213 NAS (last version of DSM installed (4.1) yesterday 5 January 2013) for automatic router configuration using EZ-internet tool as shown in the screenshot provided to the support only six others dlink model dir-300 eg but no trace of the dir-100

I specifically verified the compatibility of my router before my purchase so I really would like to enjoy automatic configuration as promised and not doing it manually.

All the others aspects of the nas and the linux based OS DSM 4.1 are really nice so far and I really think at buying additionnals NAS for professionnal use this time.

Thanks in advance,

Problem Reproduce Steps: 1) Install last (6 January 2013) version to date of DSM 4.1-2668 on a DS213
2) start EZ-internet config tool
3) show the list of the supported routers (no trace ot the dlink dir 100 in the list)
4) load the very new list of supported routers
5) retry to show the supported routers once again no trace of the dlink dir-100 router that is fully compatible according to your website
http://www.synology.com/support/router.php

Thanks in advance,

Jerome
