port forwarding issues - RESOLVED!

Postby twista » Thu Feb 18, 2010 12:13 am

Hi,

I've just made an amazing discovery!
For those of you saying that you can't get port forwarding working, but are checking it at home on the internal network - YOU CAN'T!

At least NETGEAR and DLINK does NOT allow you to view internal servers, via the external ip address + port forwarding!!!

Go to an outside PC, and just go to your routers ip address..... it worked for me!

feel such an idiot :)

Twista.

Correct.

Another solution is to add entries to your /etc/hosts (c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) file, example:

Code: Select all
127.0.0.1      localhost
192.168.0.12   syno1   syno1.myfamily.com

Then referencing syno1.myfamily.com from your computer will automatically direct you to 192.168.0.12, or whereever. Useful when building/testing website on the syno that use absolute href addresses..

I have also resolved this issue with FTP

there is a website called net2ftp.com, as you will also have the same problem as HTTP

Opposit NetGear and D-Link the Belkin and TRENDnet does work correct with forwarding
using http:/externalIP:port or http://domainName:port from the local LAN.

Hi - my first post so please be patient!

I have a Netgear which doesn't allow this :(

Editing the etc/hosts is fine for a static machine, but I have laptops, iPhone, iPOD Touch that I want to use from the LAN and outside the home.

Any advice on activating a DNS service on the NAS to resolve these domains to the LAN IP address but allowing me to leave the mail clients configured the same regardless of location?

Thanks,
Pete

I am using a LevelOne WGR-6012 router and has similar issue.

Everything works correct a month ago, i.e. I can access my diskstation by typing external IP address or domain name when I am connecting via the router at the same network.

Sadly after I upgrade the firmware of my router and my DS211 around 2 weeks ago, it doesn't work any more! Though I can still access my router via external IP address or DDNS when I am at work or using iphone on street, but I can no longer access my DS211 by using the domain name under DDNS at home.

Do anyone using LevelOne router has the same situation?

I just realized the same thing on my d-link DIR-615 running the 5.10 firmware.

I'm trying to resolve this for multiple laptops, an iphone, an android phone, and an ipad on the internal network. Has anyone had any luck getting around this issue?

i have a very stupid question that i've been googling for a while. I know a lot of people say to find the IP to a PC, go onto a browser and type in whatsmyip.com. How can i do this on the DS211j on DSM 3.2-1955. I'm trying to find the ip to that so i can put that on my DynDNs account to be able to remote in correctly.

Thanks!

Just access the DSM, go to Control Panel -> DDNS . The page should contain also a section 'Gateway information' with Internal address and External address. What you look for is the 'external address'.

I have some questions about port forwarding.

I know how to setup port forwarding for the apps within the DSM but I’m am clueless to how to access it outside of our network. I’ve read all the instruction on how to port forward but they don’t give you the tail end instructions on how to access your DS.

For example, I know for Web Management UI the port I will need to forward is 5000 and for https it’s 5001 to the internal IP of the DS. I think setup a DynDNS (my.domainname.com) domain name to my external ip which 12.345.675. I think enable that application on my DS so that it’s on for logging in external.

So when I’m outside of the network, do I type in my.domainname.com:5000 to get into my DS or just my.domainname.com? Is this the same for the DSfile and SynoLoad?

To make port-forwarding from outside, you have to set it up in your router (not the Synology)!
Here is an example from my old router, Belkin N1 Vision. It is just the same to write
the address as http://domain:externalport or http://externalip:externalport!

Image

You have to use the external port (inbound) - else you got port 80 (i.e. web-site).
My net-supplier is blocking a lot of high addresses i.e. 5000, 5001, 6000
and many more and therefore is is nessecary to make port-forwarding!

THANK YOU, TWISAT!

You just saved me another 24 hours of wasted time and some hair on my head.

This problem has been driving me nuts for the past 12 hours!

And nice trick with the HOSTS file, too, COCJH1.

I was able to verify internet access by using my laptop locally, which goes through a separate wireless router (i.e. a WAP), so I guess that tricks my Actiontec router to properly forwarding the ports . . . NICE! :)
