People's NAS Setup and Programs on their NAS

Postby me88me » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:36 pm

Hi there,

I am in the process of waiting for my Synology DS211j to be delivered and been reading a lot on this forum about troubleshootings, problems, workaround, etc. I've tried to search if there was a topic created for this and was not able to find one.

So instead of looking at all the problem areas with this great product, I wanted to see what everyone's setup is for their NAS so I can get more of feel on what their capabilities are. What programs are you using (mobile, laptop, Desktop PC)?

I know all the Synology products are pretty much plug and play but knowing that there are some very techie people out there, they will be able to push the system to it's full capacity. I figure this would also give people ideas on what they will be able to do with their NAS products as well.

My setup currently:

My Hardware:
DIR-655
Desktop
2 PC Laptop
Xbox 360
PS3
WD LIVE
Asus Tablet
Synology DS211j
1 x 3TB WD My Book Essential external hard drive - Taken out of enclosure to be used in DS211j
- Waiting for a deal to get another 3TB drive to add to the 2nd bay.

Programs I use all the time to download:
utorrent - using Demonoid
SABnZb

What I want:
Access downloads remotely - Synodroid
Create my own Cloud - EZinternet
Share files with friends and family - FTP?

What RAID are you using?
Probably will using SHR for my 2 x 3TB drive when i do get it.

What I'm trying to get out of this post is to see what people's configurations are?

What programs your running for torrents or sabNzb? Any third party programs? What RAID are you using? How to streamline the best experience using your Synology NAS?

I will be receiving my DS211j tomorrow and want some ideas on how people setup their NAS so I can best utilize this product.

Thanks everyone for looking

Hi Nunu,

How do you access the SABnzb? What do you use to search for your NZB? Is everything done on your DS211?

Thanks for that information. I'm still working on getting my system setup. I hit a speed bump with hard drive capacity issue and trying to trouble shoot it. I'll definitely PM you if you have more questions.

I own a DS411slim and use a lot of the built in applications and have also installed VPN package, Syslog Server, Transmission, Sick Beard, Config File Editor, Webalizer, phpMyAdmin, Tugs Uptime Project and VNstat.
I'm impressed that this little machine can run all of those things simultaneously without any trouble.

Hehe okay, I can explain a little :)

-VPN Package is made by Synology and makes the DS a VPN server that you can connect to when you're outside your network.

-Syslog server is also made by Synology and is a server where other devices on the network can dump log files.

-Transmission is the torrent client package created by http://synoblog.superzebulon.org/category/tr/

-SickBeard is a PVR for newsgroup users (with limited torrent support). It watches for new episodes of your favorite shows and when they are posted it downloads them, sorts and renames them. http://synoblog.superzebulon.org/category/sb/

-Config File Editor is a handy little package for editing files directly on the NAS http://www.mertymade.com/syno/#cfe

-Webalizer is the package from Synology that keeps statistics from the webserver.

-phpMyAdmin is the package from Synology and it's for controlling MySQL database on the NAS.

-Tug's Uptime Project is just for fun and a place to compete for the best uptime :) http://users.uptimeprj.com/Noisemaker/en/

-VNstat is an IPKG package that creates statistics from the network card in the NAS. http://humdi.net/vnstat/

That's just some of the things you can put on your Syno. Some of them require modding and some commmand line skills, but all the packages are for loading up in Synology package manager and of you go.
I hope you can use som of this and maybe learn little about what it can do and how it works :)

OMG Tommy, you just helped me out tremendously! This is what I was hoping to get out of the post! You are super ROCK! Thank you for putting everything in layman's terms for me so I understand what each of these apps do. I would really like to learn how to use the VPN, Transmission, Sickbeard, and Config File Editor. I just really want a download and media server without keeping my primary PC on all the time.

Again Tommy, thank you, thank you, thank you...

p.s. - i might PM you down the line if I have any questions, but i'll definitely trouble shoot everything prior so i won't be bugging you.

Great, everything was working fine and I started to try new features like VPN and IP6v tunneling and now i can't even log into my DS. I was able to from the local network now i can't!! weird..

However, all my devices can see the NAS except my PC.

Wow, i was hoping the Synology was plug and play but there is a lot more to learn to get everything the way you want. I don't know what i did to my NAS but i think i will need to reinstall DSM hoping that i won't lose the data. Probably going to have to transfer 1tb back into my PC and reformat?? i hope not...

Usually when you reinstall your NAS, the data partition stays intact, but to be on the safe side make a backup.
I have never lost data when I have reinstalled or updated so chances are that you won't either.

Just a did reinstall and everything was fine. Had to do it another time because i used EZinternet and for some reason, made me lose access to my NAS. We don't need to used EZinternet if we just manually port forward but will need to enable the apps on the DS211j? For instance, enable WebDAV and then port forward it on the DIR655 correct is pretty much the same as having it done on the EZinternet?

Glad to hear it went well :)
I don't use EZinternet. I prefer to do my forwarding manually. I'm kind of old school :D

Yes that's correct
