BTW, it wasn't mentioned in your instructions, but when doing this procedure, make sure you don't delete the modified usb.agent and restore the original one after printing works for the first time! I did that and turned the printer off & on and tried printing again which didn't work. Seems like the driver needs to be copied/installed every time the printer is turned on and detected by the DSxxx.

What did you mean by that? I am having trouble printing using the above procedure, and it works until I turn off the printer. At that point, a file wont print until I conntct the printer to a computer, print a test page, and then re-connect to NAS. Then it will print from a computer, wirelessly.

Why would you do that?

Turn it off if you don't need it, don't "eject" (whatever that means) it.

Remember, this is a work-around to use a NON-NETWORK printer in a network environment. :)

What I meant by "eject it" is there is a option in "external devices" of the control panel
to eject the USB printer.
I was just wondering if there was a way since this printer doesn't have a standby "low" power
mode when not in use. I also wanted to confirm other people are experinecing the same
issue

I know this is a workaround and very happy that I at least have some functionality :D
Thanks

I just turn the printer off when not needed, which is 98% of the time. I've never tested the printer's power draw, have you?

I was testing almost everything in sight a month ago, but since I never did the printer, I'm now curious.

Great work, I've been able to use my P1006 on the DS211J.

There's one thing, though, that I haven't been able to use: double-side printing.

I've tried to activate the function but:

- With bi-directional support on, the driver won't even remember that I activated the double-side printing;
- With bi-directional support off, the driver was able to remember that I activated the double-side printing, but it wouldn't function at all (i.e.: the pages were printed directly all as single-sided).

Is there ANY way to use the double-side function?

Hello.

I've successfully implemented efex solution to attach an HP Laserjet 1020 to a DS210j. The firmware was sent to the printer and everything was ok.

Recently, I tried to print some docs and nothing happened: the firmware didn't seem to be sent to the printer. I checked the /var/log/hp file and there were no lines being written.
I checked the /var/log/messages file and there were these lines:
Sep 5 23:36:09 kernel: [21079091.610000] hub 1-1:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Sep 5 23:36:15 kernel: [21079097.330000] hub 1-1:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Sep 5 23:36:20 kernel: [21079103.050000] hub 1-1:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Sep 5 23:36:26 kernel: [21079108.770000] hub 1-1:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Sep 5 23:36:26 kernel: [21079108.770000] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1

I never changed anything, my configuration is stable for many months. What could be wrong?

I'm assuming you've found the trouble since you haven't been back for over 2 weeks. If so, can you let everyone know what you found?

If you haven't solved it, is your hub bad, or did you update the the DSM version (you'll have to reinstall everytime you update)?

I'm sorry I haven't said anything in the meanwhile.

After some usb port switching and manual firmware feeding, it started working again. After that, I always checked that the DS was awake before switching on the printer and never saw the error again. I don't know exactly what made it work again.

I never saw the error again until the update to DSM 3.2, when it completely stopped working. Simply reinstalling this thread's solution doesn't work.
I tried a cat /usr/syno/hotplug/firmware/sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0 by hand but got the error message
can't create /dev/usb/lp0: No such device.

Maybe there's another way to reinstall the firmware feeding to the printer on synology's scripts but I haven't found one. It will be a pity if there's no way because, despite being an older model, the printer is in excellent condition. :(

I am having the same trouble.

The printer was working until I upgraded to DSM 3.2
The support guy said that I was having cable issues, when nothing changed, infact the printer is working when I plug it directly to the computer.
I have been having the problems since September 30th 2011 and technicians are still trying to resolve the problem.

this is very frustrating. Any help will be much appreciated.

What version of DSM are you using?

For those having trouble with DSM 3.2, have you either

1) found a solution?

or

2) insured that you've followed every step, including modifying the files correctly?

I've been traveling for a couple of months so I haven't upgraded yet, but I'm hoping we can get all problems resolved before I do upgrade to 3.2.

Hi xcopy.

1) Not yet.

2) Followed every step, doesn't work.

If you try to do it yourself, please tell us of your findings.

Just got it to work with DSM 3.2-1955 and HP LaserJet P1505. Fantastic :D

Just followed the guide. Saved the file to a share and edited in from my Windows 7 (32 bit) with Notepad++. Never uses Windows Notepad since there can be special linebreaks or other "funny stuff" that breaks the file.

I'm still not back to my boxes so I can't try it yet, but to help those that make be wondering what the line break problem is/looks like, I posted an example on page 3 of this thread. The image is from Notepad ++ showing both Unix and Windows linefeed characters. They should all be Unix/Linux.
