Difference between "File Browser" and "File Station"

Postby redsweater » Fri Mar 18, 2011 4:11 pm

What is the difference between "File Browser" and "File Station"?

Interestingly, File Station is only available when logged in as admin even though File Station is checked in the Application Privileges for other users.

File Browser and File Station are both file explorers and management utilities of DSM. File Browser is only available through the DSM Management UI while if you enable File Station it can be accessed separately through its own web UI.
Any user who has File Station previlige assigned can login to it (not restricted to admin only). Please check your previliges settings by going into the control panel -> application previliges then select the user and click Edit button and make sure that File Station checkbox is ticked.

Primary difference I can see is one(file browser) is meant for the admin and the other is meant for users(file station)

Tanveersatter gave the answer: File Station can be directly accessed from outside via the web, File browser cannot be directly accessed and only runs inside the DSM.

That means you can restrict a user to accessing only the File Station so they can download or upload files to specific folders. They can be denied access the DSM interface or anything else so they cannot meddle. PM me if you want further details.

That is no longer true, File Station can be accessed without logging into DSM in 4.0
Still have to log in (obviously) but you don't need to expose the entire interface, just the file browser itself. To be honest you could always do this if you were paying attention to the URL, but now it's easier

That is what I said. FILE STATION can be accessed without logging into DSM, so restricting the user and keeping them out of DSM. File BROWSER only runs inside of DSM!

Actually, in DSM 4.0 the file browser function (in lower caps) in named "File Station." So it can be confusing.

File Station 4 doesn't seem to have a progress bar, so to me it seems more like File Browser 3 apart from not using the DSM interface when logged in. If the progress bar is really lost that is a real move backwards.
