Or even better, support an existing product. The need is for a home automation server not a new one :)

A good Home security/automatin application that incorporates touch screens (IPad or Android) and ZigBee based sensors and IP cameras! Hmm, another way for Synology to justify the cost of IP camera licensing :D

1) Have a look at OpenRemote. It is as the name says open source, and also it is free. There is even a spk package that has been made by Patters. See http://pcloadletter.co.uk/2011/10/25/op ... -synology/. He is not using it himself, so do post your questions at their forum http://www.openremote.org/display/forums.
I did install the thing on my DS212+. In principle it works. They support a whole range of protocols. Zigbee and ZWave are not yet incorporated, but I understand they are working on Z-Wave. As I only have ZWave devices, I still use other software via my PC.
EDIT 20121016: There is some basic support for Z-Wave now

2) Though not open source, but still free, one also might have a look at Z-Wave>Me http://zwave.me. This is a cloud-based controller with a client on the PC side, but is is also possible to install on a Linux machine. The client software needs to have a 24/7 connection, which would make a synobox a perfect client. As I have no Linux skills whatsoever, I have not tried that yet. They do license their software to big parties. So that might be something for Synology to look in. The downside is that you are restricted to the ZWave protocol, but there are over 600 certified Zwave devices these days.

edit:
3) There is a French delopment called SynoZwave. They do even have a .spk package of a beta version, which if I understand correctly supports a number of different Z-sticks. In package manager (DSM 4.0) you can install the package at your own risk via http://bilil.comuf.com/synozwave/repo. There is a French forum here: http://www.maison-et-domotique.com/foru ... -synology/. And also here on Synology we now have a thread viewtopic.php?f=27&t=52363

After further experimenting with Z-wave>Me I found this free Cloud service a very interesting platform to start with. It is restricted to Z-wave devices, but there are a great many of them (see examples).
For a minimal hardware setup you need a Windows/Linux machine with a Zwave controller that comes in the form of a USB stick (e.g. Aeon Z-stick), and e.g. a light dimmer.
As software you need a little program called Z-connector that makes a permanent connection between your Zwave controller and the the Z-Cloud service. Once that is up and running you can control your home from any place in the world via a secure WEB browser. For more info read the instructions and background documents.
They are presently working on a Z-box, which contains all the functions given by the cloud service. I think that is a very nice business concept to let you experiment with the concept at no cost, before you decide to purchase additional hardware if you really need a more robust local system.
edit: I have problems compiling the client for DS212+. I started the discussion on that on another thread

The posts referred above are all in the French language. Can anyone summarize what this is? Is it a derivative of OpenZwave? I did install on my DS212+, but it seems to be dysfunctional.

Hi everybody,

I'm the developper of SynoZwave.

SynoZwave uses the opensource library OpenZwave.
I created a webserver(libmicrohttpd) to interact with OpenZwave through HTTP commands.

For the moment, I only tested binary switch with an Aeon Labs Zstick.
Some people on the french forum help me to include new devices into the web interface.

If you have any questions, just ask. I'll do my best to answer to them

@pz1 :
Do you have any Zwave materials ? Or do you just install the package ?
