iTunes Sever and Apple TV2

Postby wildeco » Wed Sep 21, 2011 7:05 am

I got the 211j so I could stream all my music AND video to my apple tv2's. Can this be done? If not....
I have DLNA in all my rooms as well but what do I use to rip DVD's so the Synology media sever will serve them to my DLNA TV?

Thanks

No you cannot stream to an AppleTV it is locked into Homesharing.

The only way to make the ATV2 play media from the NAS is to jailbreak it and install XBMC.

As to making the DVD's play on DLNA TV's it depends on the type of TV and their media support is often terrible.
1) AnyDVD + VOB2MPG, use this to rip out original main movie to a standalone .mpg file which should work on most TV's.
2) MakeMKV, use this to rip out original main movie to a standalone .mkv file which should work on most good media players.

I'm using DS Audio with Air Play enabled on the ATv instead of iTunes server. However after a few minutes playing, it starts to break up and then stops completely, until I hit play again. Very strange, it is like a bad connection, although I have a GigE LAN, same result on the wifi. It works fine with my toshiba TV.

Another option, which actually works, is using iTune on a network computer and streaming to the ATV with AirPlay. I have all my songs on a shared drive, so the media is coming from the my DS211j.

The disadvantage of the second option is that you actually need a computer up and running, which in my case I control with an iPad with the remote app. So really, I'm using: synology, iPad, ATv and a PC to play on my living room! Not pretty, not green, but works.

I'll try to find some time to play with DS Audio streaming to the ATv and I'll post here if I find the issue. Not ideal, but It would eliminate the PC from the picture... But you still need the iPad or some other device to run DS Audio.

Please keep us informed. I certainly want a PC-less solution as soon as.

I found an App called Remote HD, which allowed me to connect to the ATv (1st gen, but should work on 2nd Gen too).

This app requires you to load a "Remote Helper" component on the ATv in order to control it. The nice thing about it is that the helper works as modified AirPlay speaker on the ATv (shows up as "Apple TV-RHD"). Now DS Audio sees the ATv as a speaker, and it actually works pretty well.

I'm not even sure you need the app for this. I think if you just install the Remote Helper, it should work too. Here is the link for the app: http://remotehd.com/AppleTV/Download

So far so good, I can now play all my iTunes library on my living room, without using the desktop, just an iPhone or iPad! :D

Not sure it matters, but just in case, I'm using IOS 5 on the iPhone ans iPad.

The ATV2 already has Airplay you don't need RemoteHD that is for ATV1 only.
