to iSCSI or not, that is the question

Postby studiodann » Thu Sep 22, 2011 5:17 pm

Hi there, I'm new here

I use Macs and want to get the most out of my Synology.

If I use an iSCSI to expand my laptop:
- is it easy/safe to connect to over the net when on the road
- is all the data on the iSCSI covered by the setup RAID (so I don't lose data when one of the drives melts down)?
- any problems on expanding the RAID when using iSCSI
- Will I really see a speed advantage or should I stick to normal shared volumes?
- Can I use Time Machine to backup the iSCSI target? (If possible even to the same Synology NAS?)
- Is there any good content on the net? I find many tutorials either don't go deep enough into the subject or are made for network specialists

many thanks

been doing more research and fould some anwers to my own questions

- is all the data on the iSCSI covered by the setup RAID (so I don't lose data when one of the drives melts down)?

Yes it is

- any problems on expanding the RAID when using iSCSI

haven't tried it but there should be no reason why not, always keep a backup when expanding/changing HD

- Can I use Time Machine to backup the iSCSI target? (If possible even to the same Synology NAS?)

I use the same NAS for Time Machine for all Macs in the company and added the iSCSI to the service and it works so far.

One thing I didn't expect is that on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and I suppose this happens to all Mac OS X computers, when deleting a file from an attached iSCSI drive it doesn't go to the Trash, it just disappears which is again a setback.
I really would like to be able to use my NAS and be able to accidentally delete a file and not lose it doing so.
