Time Machine completed a verification of your backups

Postby gd11_be » Mon Aug 01, 2011 1:20 am

Dear All,

All of a sudden I'm constantly getting this error msg.

“Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.”

I can still go into time machine, and scroll back to the past. I have also verified the quota and I am at 180 out of 250 GB. What is strange is the fact that the dialogbox indicated: available 722 GB of 1.47 TB, which is a bit strange?

Does anybody knows what this could be ? Thanks !

Geert

After reading up on this on a couple of websites, it looks like it is more safe to create a new backup. As I don't need to go back at this stage to any 'old' stuff, I decided to just create a new backup

http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C13.html

So that is what I have started now .... lets see !  hopefully this will not happen again, and is/was not due to the Synology DS 211 but due to a MAC OSX issue.  doesn't feel very comfortable.

If anybody else has had the same problem with 3.2 Beta - 1869, might be interesting to keep the forum up to date.

Let me confirm that I received the same message a few days after upgrading to Lion/DSM 3.2. I had about 7 months of Time Machine history that I had transitioned from an older Diskstation to my current DS211. I have kept Time Machine off while I wait for a new version of DSM or Lion. I would prefer to keep my old history if this is a glitch but it might be safer to back up everything.

Hi Scott,

thanks, I was in exactcly the same situation: 6 months of hapily backing up, and 2 - 3 days after the beta, I had the same issue. I have deleted my old backup (as I didn't need the history, but I fully appreciate that this is not an option for other people) and redone a complete backup.

Curiuos of Synology has a fix for this issue moving forward.

I have the same problem with 3.2 beta, but still running Snow Leopard. I have now turned off TM and hope for the final version of 3.2 before deleting my backup history...

... I have used the Disk Utility to check for errors on the sparse bundle, but it says that everything is ok

However Time Machine still refuses to use it.

Remember that I am still using Snow Leopard.

Any ideas?

Same situation for me with DSM 3.2 beta and at least one OSX Lion machine.
I have already had such an issue in the past with previous DSM and OSX Snow Leopard, but I have to admit that it was very seldom.

If I correctly understood, the new Synology implementation of AFP should be more robust and in particular regarding Time Machine backup… But don't forget we are testing a beta firmware so this is probably a matter of "fine tuning" ;-)

I have the same problem after updating to beta with Lion

My current solution: avoid letting your mac goes into sleep while time machine is running.

If you are using a laptop, make sure you stop backup process before closing the lid.

One of the first things I want to do with my new Synology 1511+ is to have the various Mac's back-up using Time Machine via the network.
I followed the manual but soon after the authentication Time Machine presents the message that it could not complete the back-up.

"The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features"

Any advice what to do?

You shouldn't have such a message with DSM 3.2 beta.
3.1 AFP implementation is lacking some features that are mandatory for Lion.

Are you sure you have 3.2 beta on your NAS ?

Aha indeed I have 3.1. Thought I had the latest software by downloading the software rather than installing from the CD. Will check.

Automatic software update does not propose beta releases, you have to download it manually from Synology website.

I'm using DSM 3.2-1869 (DS211J) and I started seeing this error too when I switched to Lion.

It's a real issue since performing a full backup takes 8 days with my Synology DS211J drive (over wifi)...

Would be great if this could be fixed in a new revision release of DSM 3.2...

ATM this makes my DS211J drive not usable for me (I'm only using it for TM backup).

Thanks

I've received this error twice since upgrading to Lion and installing the beta. Once it occurred a couple of days after the upgrade and it just occurred to me again this week. I think I may have put my mac to sleep in the middle of a time machine backup and then I received the error later that day.
