The same happens here quite often. I cannot say that it stops after 30s, but it stops in the middle of the song (not always but quite often). If I go to the DS Audio or via App from my iOS device, the song is still playing, just no audio output. I have to pause and restart the song. This is very annoying!!!
It is strange because I think this problem has just started since a few days, cannot remember to have seen this before. It is also quite complex to troubleshoot, no idea where the problem is. I've already restarted all devices, which did not help. Apart from that, nothing has changed in my network recently, I just have put a bunch of music to the server. I don't think this is can be the issue (or is there any limitation on the DS Audio server and causing this issue??...hmmmm...would be very strange...).

I have a DS409+ connected to the network router which is a Airport Extreme. I have an Airport Express which is connected to my Hifi. The Airport Express gets the music over the LAN, the WLAN on Airport Express is switched off. All devices use latest firmware.

If I stream the music from the DS409+ to my iPod and from there to the Airport Express (so not directly from DS409+, as I had to do before the DS supported Airplay), I do not experience such issues.

Can anyone help with this? It's not usable this way if there are so many interruptions while playing songs...

Audiostation to Airport Express problem

Postby grundfuttock » Sat Jul 16, 2011 7:51 pm

Hi,
I'm not exactly sure where to post this problem but here sems as good aplace as any.

When using AudioStation or DSaudio to play mp3 tracks to apple airport express units the music stops after approx 40 seconds on each track.

The sliders show that the track is seemingly being played and checking the resource manager shows that data is being transmitted. At the end of the track the next track starts and plays for about 40 secs before again going silent.

The problem can be reproduced. It occurs on both of my airport express units. The network is wired through a 100Mb switch. The problem does not occur when I use iTunes on the PC to play to the units.

Not sure if it is relevant, but the data transmission rate from the NAS at the start of the tracks is far higher than I would have expected.

Any thoughts ?

Which firmware version of AirPort Express? and is 802.11g or 802.11n?

Firmware should be latest. Airport utility reports it as version 6.3

AE units are Wireless n. [update - I thought the AE were wireless n. I've done some more detailed checking and I now think they are the older wireless g version. This explains why the latest firmware for them is 6.3 rather than 7.5.2]

However they are connected using ethernet. Wireless is disabled on one unit and is available on the other, but not used for connection to DS.

At the request of Synology support I have (after a bit of head scratching) directly connected the AE to the DS. The problem remains exactly the same.

Like a previous poster, I think the problem didn't exist at first. If we can't get this sorted I'm going to be a bit peeved. The Synology implementation of airplay can only play to a single renderer at a time and now it doesn't work properly at all.

Any / all suggestions welcome.

Rgds,
Geoff

I have the exact same problem.

Streams directly from my USB Station 2 to my Airport Express - song plays but sound disappears after approx. 30 sec.

Stream through my iPhone to AE. Music streams perfectly, but not optimal since iPhone use all battery.

Please fix this Synology.

Re: AirPlay in Audio Station Working ?

Postby grundfuttock » Sun Jul 24, 2011 11:22 pm

Hi,

There are a number of posters who are trying to use the DS to play directly to an Airport express unit and having a problem where the music stops after about 30 seconds although a DS Audio or Audio Station shows the playout continuing.

I think the problem is in the Synology implementation of Airplay, but does anyone have this configuration (Diskstation playing direct to Airport Express as a renderer) working ?

If so, please list your configuration in as much detail as possible.

Geoff

Thats all :)

Thank you.

Do you know what version firmware your airport express is running ? Is it wireless n ?

Hi All,

I'm guessing here but I think that the problem of music tracks cutting out after around 30 secs when playing to Airport Express units is related to the version of Airport Express (and firmware in use).

Synology support (who've been pretty helpful) cannot reproduce the problemtesting against newer (wireless n) versions running 7.5.2 firmware. My units are older and run version 6.3 firmware.

To prove or disprove this guess it'd be helpful if people who have this problem could state what version of hardware / firmware they have. The firmware version is easily found by running the Apple Airport Utility software.

A clincher would be someone who has the problem, upgrades the firmware to 7.5.2 and sees the problem go away.

I'm experiencing the issue on an old airport (802.11n not supported) and I cannot upgrade the firmware above 6.3.

Hi there,

I see (hear) the issue all the time and this way it is unusable. As written in my earlier post, I'm using an Airport Express with FW 7.5.2, which is connected directly over the Ethernet Port to my Linksys GbE Switch, where also my Synology NAS is connected. So the communication is going directly over the wire, no WLAN (WLAN extension) in between.

In the logfile of the Airport Express it just tells that the Airtunes Stream was started and once I get the interruption it tells that the Airtunes Stream was stopped. If I send Music which is locally stored on my iPod or iPad via Airplay to the Airport express, I do not experience this issue. So "I assume" this is an issue on the Synology or an incompatibility between the two devices.

This way, Airplay is not usable for me :( and I will continue with my workaround: I have the DS Audio App on my iPod, stream the Music to it and send it from the iPod to the Airport Express. This way, everything runs fine but it should only be a workaround...

I think it is N compatible, I bought it just some months ago so it's quite new :)
I can check the system version later when I get home.

If you have an issue with this, I suggest you report it as a bug to the Synology people. They might request to open up the firewall so that they can SSH & Telnet into your system. I have done this after an issue with skipping songs in the DS Audio App. The people were very helpful and with a bit of combined effort (and some chatting in Skype), I have received a solution.

Just my 2 cents.

PS: now running a setup with a DS211, iMac with iTunes, iPad with DS Audio Station, iTouch with DS Audio Station, Onkyo NR708 as a DLNA renderer, and a B&W Zeppelin Air via wireless. All connected to a CISCO E3000 router.. happily talking & singing to each other. :P :P

Next test on this: hooking up my Apple TV1 again in Wifi, and use the XBMC as a renderer.. lets see
iMac - 2.8 - i7 - 16GB - Lion
iTouch - 32 GB - iOS 5.0.01
MacBook Pro Early 2008 - 2.4
MacBook Air i5 128 GB SSD
MacBook Pro i5 Early 2011 - 2.3
iPad 16 GB & iPad2 16 GB - iOS 5.0.1
Apple TV1 - #Leia / Apple TV2 - #DarthVader
Onkyo TX-NR708 / Technics - SL 1200 MKII (Vinyl still rules)
Synology DS211 - DSM 4.1 - #R2D2 / Synology DS209J - DSM 4.1 - #SkyWalker
Xbox 360 - Black LE
Mission 774 (F&R) + 7 (C) / Mission Sub / B&W Zeppelin Air - #HanSolo

Thanks. I did this some time back. The Synology support people have been pretty good in trying to diagnose the problem (and uncovered another problem with the older AEs on the way). I suspect that they are running out of puff now though and have other priorities. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they made a statement that they only supported the newer models of AE. I'm tempted to buy new AE units and sell the old ones on e-bay but I heared a rumour of a new model from Apple in the not to distant future.

Hi all,

Very very good news, I've loaded the new DSM 3.2 yesterday and the Airplay interruption problem is gone :!: :!: :!: :D
Very great, thank you Synology! Now I can stream directly from the DS and use all my iOS and Android hardware just as a remote control, sending the music to every room from everywhere....great! And unlike with the Sonos System, Synology does not have a file limit of 64'000.

Synology is just great!
