1511+ Compatible RAM List

Hi all,

I'm brand new to the Synology family and this is my first post. I need assistance please with the expandable RAM modules that will work with the 1511+ unit as there isn't really any information out there (that I can find).

I just received my units (1511+/510) y/day and did some research and found (somewhere) a big list of compatible RAM modules. I bought a Transcend DDR2 800 SODIMM (JM800QSU-2G) 2GB module. I installed it before completing any prior set-up of the NAS and powered up the unit.

All seemed fine until during the initial set-up the unit suddenly became unavailable on the network and the power light was flashing. I followed the Synology recommendations of removing all drives and peripherals, powered off and on again and the power LED was still just flashing - to my horror this represented a motherboard failure.

Anyway, long story short, I removed the RAM module today and the NAS seems to be working fine. Once the test disc has completed it's volume creation I may try again and see if I was just unlucky the first time.

So, my questions are this:

1) If anyone has successfully upgraded their RAM module, what did you use.

2) Am I being completely blind and missing a list somewhere?

3) How far/how hard to you have to push the RAM into the slot? - as from exp. with all other RAM modules you push them in so that you can't see the gold connectors, but the 1511+ doesn't seem to let you push the RAM too far in and I'm just being extra cautious at the moment.

Well, it's been a few weeks and not a single reply with compatible RAM modules. I was expecting some advice and am really quite surprised this forum gave no replies.

I found that the RAM module was indeed compatible. I rebooted the 1511+ without the extra RAM and the system started up fine. I made all of the relevent startup settings, turned off, put the RAM back in (and yes, with a bit more force this time), rebooted and all is working well.

I believe I saw someone post that they used Crucial memory (CT25664AC800) and it worked fine.

Waiting on some Corsair memory (VS2GSDS800D2) myself.

Anyone know of a command line tool to test memory / check out the specs?

Today I´ve upgraded the RAM of my DS1511+. Used modul:
Samsung 2 GB S0-DIMM DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400 (see ebay # 350465488746)
The DS1511+ showes 3 GB at all & is working fine untill now
- I´ll write here if I´ll get problemes...

So I just received my DS1511+ the other day and as you all know, it came with the standard 1GB of RAM. How do I upgrade it to the maximum 3GB? Do I take out the 1GB stick already installed and replace it with a 3GB or do I just add a 2GB stick? Also, which RAM should I use? Is there a compatibility list somewhere?

Sorry for all the newbie questions and thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Morbeas,

You just add a 2GB stick of RAM. The 1GB is already integrated into the unit.

As per my experience, just make sure you push the extra RAM module very firmly into the expansion slot (so that the gold connectors of the RAM module aren't visible). Reboot the NAS and you'll be good to go.

Also it's worth noteing:
"Please note that it is still using the DDR2-800 SO-DIMM rams instead of DDR3. We gotten the Elixir 2GB DDR2-800 from Memory World. They are CL5 rated and they work great with the NAS. Theoretically you can take out the 1GB and also upgrade to 2GB but since this is still a 32bit system , it is not worth the while." I can confirm Samsung MV-2S2G4/US does NOT work (2GB DDR2-800). Flashing power light. The RAM was properly seated.

For me "Kingston ValueRAM, 1 GB, DDR2-800, CL5, SODIMM" works fine. You can test it with the Synology setup tool, it has the possibility to boot up the NAS in memory test mode.

Main specs for the module to work: 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2-800 / PC2-6400, CL5

I can confirm that the Corsair Value Select 4GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory Module - VS4GSDS800D2 worked for me as well. The 1511+ that I received last week runs a 64-bit OS and recognizes all 5 GB.

It's basically any PC2-6400 2GB 800MhZ 200-pin stick, right? So this should work, correct?

From my limited knowledge, yes. But it has to also be CL5.

Play it safe though. Use our examples which have proven to work or those posted on the compatibility lists provided on the Synology site. That would be my advice.

Working under the motto: "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." My DS1511+ has now more memory than my PC and I paid less for the 4GB Corsair Module than I would have paid for the official 1GB Module. Max
