Thumbnails : slow slow slow

Postby miura » Wed May 18, 2011 8:44 am

Since 2 weeks i configured a DS211 with Raid 1.

Now, i want to store all my (personal) photo's to the NAS and it should be possible to share all photo's to my ipod, pc's, TV, ... (so all possible INTERNAL devices)

i enabled photostation, copied as test about 75MB photo's (around 1MB per photo) to \\xxxx\photo\Album1 folder.

When checking now the photostation, i indeed see the Album1 but when checking the album I see only a few photo's ... the rest is "generating thumbnails "... ) . After waiting a long time (30 minutes) i see more photos but still generating thumbnails for more then 50% of my photo's....

Via my Ipod i indeed see only the pictures which are 'ready to view', the rest has "loading sign" ... (so same as what i see in photostation)

I can't believe this is normal .. but don't know what's going wrong...

My idea was to store all my pictures, movies into albums ... but i have the feeling it will take days ...

Any help ?

Same problem for me.

I was planning to put all my pictures on my DS110j, for ease of use, and accessible to all my devices (computers, iPad, etc.).

I did a test with 30 pictuers (total 30MB), which took a lot of time to upload. (I was trying with the Syno Assistant, then with direct copy in the Finder.... same..)

Then, what a surprise !!! when it took an hour to generate the thumbnails (and the index??) for only 30 pictures.

I don't think I'll be able to put my 10 000 pictures on the DS.

Is it a known issue? Is there a fix?
Or maybe, nobody is using Photo Station? (I doubt there is this built-in Application, and nobody is using it... why keep it, if it's just useless?)

Thanks for your info and help,

Thierry.

Same problem here with ds211 withblatest dsm 3.1
Uploading is very fast (gb network).
Generating thumbnails takes minutes per photo.

Any patch or resolution?

the solution is to upload your photos via Photo Uploader. the tumbnails will be created via your (faster) pc.

On French forum for Syno, I found a topic where they explain we should do it from the Synology Assistant. With that way, it's the processor from the computer which is used and not the DS.

I tried, and it's faster.
Of course, not as convenient as putting all pictures in once, directly in the shared.

But it's still taking so long time to generate all.
I don't think I can do 20Gb like this.

the thing I've found which I find strange is even after using the Photo Uploader in Synology Assistant is that the CPU on the DS then goes back up to 100% and it says it's converting. :? Am I missing something? Isn't the point of using the uploader so that the DS doesn't have to convert anything?

My DS is not using its processor, when I upload the pictures from Syno Assistant.
Only the mac processor is "heating".
Are you sure you did not copy extra pictures, directly on the DS ?

(I did some more, this week end, and it's not as bad as I first thought. I can upload 1Go, 700 pictures, in one hour. It's long, but it can run in the night, or when I don't use my computer.
It's a little constraint, but so good to watch all pictures in a blink on the iPad.)

Hi there,

probably I have the same problem with my DS211J. I am uploading pictures from day to day with the synology assistant on mac. If I look with the console on the DS211J, the convert-job is running the pictures I already uploaded with thumbnails. How can I stop this behaviour?

Regards

In Assistant, click on preferences (Wheel icon) add a tick in "Photo Uploader" and you are no longer blind ;-)

This seriously needs an acceptable solution!

At least make It possible to view photos that haven't been converted yet! Can't even view those until it catches up in 30 days or so. Total BS.

I have (from start) both a folder for the original photos and a folder for a crimped version (1200*900) of the photos - this have given a acceptable speed for the thumbnail-generation!

I have used Synology Assistant to try to reduce the soooo looong tumbnail creation time. I have moved 15 gb jpg and it is still converting after 3 days !!?

But the Synology Assistant is giving me an error when uploading to a folder "Folder not found: /photo/Ferie/2011-06 Kreta" !!? Why ? Can't I use "-" or spaces in the foldername ?

I have tried uploading jpg with synology assistant because of the not-accepted thumbsnails creating times.

But I receive an error when uploading to folder as "/photo/Ferie/2011-07 Kreta" as it says folder not found !!? What is wrong ? the folder is there. Could it be some charaters not accepted ??
