just had my replacement delivery notice so hopefully my new unit will also solve the boot issues like yours has

Excellent service from Syn on this, just a shame that a problem like this exists at all.

Well!

I just turned off my DS411+ (had to swap the UPS), for the first time. Guess what: it didn't power on anymore!
I bought this Synology NAS just a few weeks ago, mainly because I wanted the higher safety (RAID5 instead of a normal drive).

The drive doesn't power on anymore, exactly as described in this thread for many times. I got the same EDACPOWER-power supply.

Just made a support ticket, hopefully they send me a new PSU soon (why are those EDACPOWER PSU's still used anyway??)

...frustated...

New PSU arrived today and it works fine

Nice to see the 411+ in action at last!

Quite a bit larger than the original pack but it does the trick

Looks like it takes about a week from reporting the issue until the new item arrives so a good job by Synology there

Lets hope they make the revised PSU the standard issue for all future 411 + and j sales

I bought myself another (2nd) DS411j disk station wondering if the power brick issue is solved by manufacturer. Because my local retailer received a new stock there was a high probability of the new power adaptors.

After unpacking I realized that the power brick is different manufacturer and model comparing to the original one (EDACPOWER).

This time it's PGB, model EA110001E-120, Output 12V/8.33A, date code 11/04.

This finding raised a smile on my face for a while, at least until that I have connected everything together and tried to powering ON disk station. The situation repeats again, disk station powered ON after several pushes of ON button.

Well, I will give it some testing but I'm affraid that I will have to apply for a power brick replacement again :(

Compare the 2 power bricks. They are identical with exception to the name PGB vs EDACPOWER. Even the model numbers, patent numbers, ect are all the same.

DS411+ Will Not Turn On

Postby StratMaster » Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:38 pm

Hello,

Thank you for reading my post.

I bought my DS411+ in February 2011 and it has been working fine. This morning, the unit would not turn on. When the power button is pressed, it just flashes a couple of times and then stops. The unit doesn't make the usual noises and the fans don't even run.

The unit is plugged into an APC battery backup, along with the rest of my equipment, which all works fine. I am using 4 ST2000DL003 2TB 5900 RPM 64MB Cache SATA hard drives.

I am at a loss. Please share any comments or suggestions.

Thank you,

Strat

Is this issue now "fixed" with units being shipped these days?

I ordered a 411j today from Amazon. It is supposed to arrive here by the second week of May. When I open the box, what should I look for on the PSU to determine if it is one of the newer, replacement PSU's?

Hi,

I was experiencing the same problems with my Synology DS410j which I bought a little more than a year ago. I opened a ticket throught the SYNOLOGY website and this is what I wrote to them:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have this product for almost a year now and about every 2 or 3 days the system reboots itself. In the log files I can see abnormal shutdowns every 2 or 3 days.

Today the system seems to have failed completely. It won't boot up. Two green lights are flickering off and on and you can hear a constant clicking noise.

Also, the green light on the power supply seems to fade in and out.

The power vents are also not running normally: they go on and off.

When I remove all 3 hard disks, the problem still remains (flickering lights and clicking sound), but the power vents run normally.

This looks very much to a problem with the power supply unit: EDACPOWER ELEC. Model EA11001E-120 / AC input: 100-240V-2.5A, 50-60Hz / DC Output: 12V 8.33A.

I've read on several forums:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33218&start=45
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33218&start=15

that this seems to be a common (global) problem and that for many users the problem is solved with a new replacement for the power supply.

Would it be possible to get a replacement for my power supply for the DS410j?

Currently my Synology won't boot up at all and I can't access any of my data.
I'm awaiting for your reply and a quick solution to this problem.

Kind regards,
.....

Today I received my replacement adapter, which is slightlier bigger than the old one: TONE ELECTRONICS Model LTE100E-S2-1 / input: 100-240V 50-60Hz 2.1-A / output: 12V 8.33A. Max. 100W

I plugged it into the Synology and everything powers up normally again.
Hopefully no more abnormal power shutdowns.

I'm very satisfied with the support and the quick response from Synology.

All I can advise is that if your Synology adapter shows these kind of symptoms, you open a ticket through their website (and mention these postings).

Regards,
MJ

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am also experiencing this same problem. I kind of wish I'd stumbled upon this thread when I was doing my initial research on what to purchase.

I got the Synology DS411j back in February. The other night I decided to try setting up the scheduler for shutting down and turning back on. It turned off but when I tried to power it back up the following day (before it was scheduled to turn back on automatically) it took a few tries before it finally started. After getting it powered back up I deleted the scheduled shut downs but the following morning it had turned off again and I had trouble getting it started again.

Now it's on but I cannot access the drive via my computer or by using the Synology DiskStation web control panel. It seems to be on and I can play things through streaming to my media center devices but my computer can't seem to access it even after rebooting my router.

I'm going to reach out and see about getting a replacement like I see so many others have. I'm just afraid if it shuts down I won't be able to get it to come back on.

I just got my device from Amazon this Friday, and put my 4 drives in, powered in on, and have the same problem. This is the power unit I have:

PGB, model EA110001E-120, Output 12V/8.33A, date code 11/04.
I'm assuming this is a power supply from April 11, which is troubling. I filed a ticket.

Hope it's just the power supply.

Hi guys,

I'm experiencing the same issue. I sent a help request to Synology on Fri, May 13, 2011 at 8:49 AM (AEST):

I have 3 disks in this unit (DS411+): 2 x ST32000542AS and 1 x ST2000DL003
With all 3 disks in the unit, when I press the power button, the blue light stays on for a about 4 seconds, then the hdd lights flicker orange and the unit does not power on.
If I remove all HDD's from the unit, the unit will power on.
This seems to me like a power supply issue. Could I please get a replacement PSU sent out to me ?

The PSU I'm currently using is:
EDAC EDACPOWER ELEC.
MODEL: EA11001E-120

This is the response I got back today (Monday, May 16, 2011 at 1:29 PM (AEST) :

Thanks for your feedback and sorry for inconvenience.

According to your description and Serial Number, a new PSU will not solve this issue duo to some specified MB problem, please contact your retailer for RMA.

Should you have any further question.

Best Regards,

I'm very dissapointed in the response. I sent a reply back to the support email but I think it's fallen on deaf ears. Can any moderators please help me out. It's already 4 days I've been without my NAS.

Sorry, I don't get it, why are you disappointed by the answer?
They are telling you that it's not worth to waste time with swapping the PSU,
as the main board of the NAS is defective and should be replaced.
What do you wish it would happen?

Synology are sending me another power supply. I am hoping this will solve my issue.
I doubt the motherboard is faulty. If it was, it wouldn't turn on at all I'm guessing?
It's easier to try replace the psu first than the whole unit.
Synology have agreed to try the power supply, so I'm happy again ;) .... and impressed I must say.
