Did the speed just decrease? Or has it always been like that? I know the newer versions (as of 3.0) offer much better performance via NFS. Samba has received an update as well, though I'm not certain how that affects the speed.

Do you get the same results via another protocol? What about using your browser?

The upgrade procedure would be current -> 2.1 -> 3.1 yes. This is done via the web interface.
I use mine just for backup purposes as well, but had to install 3.1 obviously. If not, I probably would have ended with 2.3, because it does have a few advantages over 2.0. If you take a look at the release notes for the CS407e, you'll see things like:

  • Enhanced Storage Management (RAID 5+Spare or JBOD)
  • Enhanced Backup (backup your NAS)
  • Enhanced System Reliability (bad sector remapping, dynamic bad sector recovery and improved HDD driver quality)
  • NTFS External HDD Support
  • Auto Block and Firewall (mine is connected to the internet)
  • New Volume Manager (hybrid RAID)

DSM 3.1 has other new features which you may like (another new Storage Manager, increased NFS speed, ...), but nothing really that I would have used. The choice is yours though. Once you're upgrading, you might as well go the whole way. :)

I am now using DSM 2.0-0731. Would I go from that to CS406 DSM 2.1 0844 (link on first page of this thread) and then straight to DSM 3.1 1613? Is this installed via web front end (upgrade firmware), or using the shell as described in the first couple of pages of this thread?

I am actually not using any of the iTunes, photo, etc features, I use the CS406 as a simple file server for various backups. Would you do it in this case or just leave it as it is?

First look at your system partition
if too small, they must be enlarged.

df command- Display free disk space

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/md0 2.3G 480.5M 1.8G 21% /
/tmp 61.7M 548.0K 61.2M 1% /tmp
/dev/md2 866.9G 771.4G 95.5G 89% /volume1

this is my system partition /dev/md0 Size 2.3 GB
with Firmware 731 i think the Partition is to small: 500 MB

1. Create backup
2. Save Settings
3. Delete all Volumes on your CS406
4. ReInstall the System now
5. upgrade proceed as Alfredo has described it on:
viewtopic.php?f=128&t=14130#p66541
CS406 or CS406e DSM 3.1 1613 (upgrade from DSM 2.1 or higher only)

I havent yet upgraded the firmware of my cs 406 yet, but I just wanted to throw this out there. I have 2 other Synology NAS's and I only see this on the 406. The serial number does not show up with either synology assistant, or in the disk station manager. Its just blank. Using DSM 2.3-1157 currently, and everything is fine, just kind of bugs me. Is there a setting to display/undisplay the serial number? Is this only with CS 406's? Do I have too much time on my hands? :)

thanks!

Can not remember the CS406 to have ever seen a serial number in the manager or assistant.
Does not bother me.
Serial number on the CS406 is sufficient as a sticker to me.

I see the serial number, both with Synology Assistant and DSM. No idea why you don't see yours, maybe it's an older revision?

I've now added the links to DSM 3.1 for the CS406e as well. Thank you megagega for volunteering to install it first. :)

Hi all. Greate forum! I just tried to upgrade my DSM 2.3 to DSM 3.1 on my CS-406 but it returns an error "file might be corrupted". I checked the first disk partition: 750 MB. Might be that this is still not enough. I will try to enlarge it and try again.

I have only 750MB system partition and will try to enlarge it too. You mentioned an upgrade process described by Alfredo. Unfortunately I could not find it. After deleting all volumes, how can I enlarge the system partition?
Thanks for your help.

Cheers, Martin

Hello Martin,

http://ukdl.synology.com/download/ds/us ... de_enu.pdf
See on Site 20

This is the way for reinstall:

Reinstalling Synology Server
If for any reason you have to reinstall the Synology Server, you can press the RESET button on the back panel twice, and the Synology Server will be reinstalled. The data saved on the Synology Server will not be erased during the reinstallation. However, for security’s reason, we strongly recommend that you back up the data on the server.
To reinstall the server:
1. Press the “RESET” button and hold it for about 4 seconds. Release the button when the Synology Server emits a beep sound.
2. Within the next 10 seconds, press the “RESET” button and hold it for about 4 seconds again. Release the button when the Synology Server emits three beep sounds.
3. Run Synology Assistant, and set up the Synology Server again.

upgrade proceed as Alfredo has described it:
CS406 or CS406e DSM 3.1 1613 (upgrade from DSM 2.1 or higher only) :!:

That error has nothing to do with your partition size. Check the MD5 of the file you've downloaded, it should match the one I provided. If not, download the file again and see if it matches then.

Hi Alfredo. Thank you for your reply. I loaded the DSM_CS406_1613.pat file into the RapidCRC 0.6.1 and let the MD5 calculate using the Go button on "Create MD5 file". It shows me the same as you posted on the first page of this forum. I used the Internet Explorer 8 to upload the file in the "Firmware Update" area of the DiskStation Manager 2.3. After uploading "Transferring data to the server. Please wait..." -> "Preparing for system update..." it still says "Fail to update the file. The file is probably corrupt."
I have no idea what else might be the problem. But I can also live with 2.3 :)

Could you please try another browser? And if possible, don't use a Wifi to upload the file, but a wired connection.

Hi Alfredo.
I tried to use firefox 4.0.1 and wired LAN connection instead. But still the same error "Fail to update the file. The file is probably corrupt.". Currently I have the firmware DSM 2.3-1141 on my cube station. (the version you provided last year. I had no problem installing that).
I did just an update on 2.3-1157 that you provided on the first page. Worked fine. Now when I select DSM Update the system tells me "Insufficient capacity for update. Please make sure the system partition must be in normal condition and has at least 300 MB available.". Checking with PuTTY and command df -h I see that my /dev/md0 has only 263.3MB available. So I guess I have to change the system partition.
I found out what uses so much space on my system partition. It is the indexing on /var/database/pgsql. Totaly 180MByte  I will try to copy the pg_xlog to the volume1, install the new 3.1 and copy it back. Lets see... :P
YEESSS, the update worked. Now I only have a small problem, trying to activate the Download function the system tells me "there is no volume in your system". I checked with ssh and I see volume1 mounted. I can also access it with file browser. But the /var/database/ is empty. Another forum commented to use "As root: /usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S20psql.sh restart" but still did not work. I will try further... (maybe I should have copied the whole database back and forth)

Hi Alfredo.
Something is still very wrong on my CS :| First the converter -registry app and synoindexing app was running for 3 days, I got that stopped by moving all my pictures to another location. Now at least I do not get the error of not having a volume registered but activating the media server does not work (I mark and save it, but after processing it is unmarked again). Also re-indexing is grayed out. Do you have on your version a DB stored under /usr/database/? That folder is still empty. I am backuping now my 600GB (takes my CS 20 hours on a USB 2.0 1TB disk with ext3 format  ) and I most probably have to reset my CS.
Update: after reseting and restoring my CS everything works again :)
Regards, Martin
