how to limit bandwidth in File Station

Postby compuquest » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:33 pm

Hello,

I can limit the bandwith for FTP (port 21) but this limit work not for File Station users (port 7000). Is there another setting or trick?

Thanks for the support.

I am using a Linksys Wrt610Nv2 with DD-WRT installed as my router and a Synology DS211j DiskStation with PhotoStation and AudioStation set up. I can limit the bandwidth up to the internet through the QoS page in the router. Settings are -
Port: WAN
Packet Scheduler: HTB
Uplink: 550kbs (about 90% of my up speed for dsl)
Downlink: 5000kbs (about 90% of my down speed for dsl)
MAC Priority: 00:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX Bulk (put your DiskStation MAC address here)
XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX Exempt (put your gaming devices or computers as desired)

This works extremely well when I want to play an online game and my sister downstate is uploading or downloading pics to the family album. Before I did this UO was unplayable when the DS211j was in use, now I don't really notice it.

I too have searched and even posted on the feature requests section.
Whenever a friend starts heavily downloading through Filestation our internal internet comes to a crawl. So bad I had to disable their access to Filestation and limit them to FTP access only, which I can throttle back a bit.
Synology really needs to add a way to set a bandwidth limit like FTP. Filestation is awesome and everyone prefers it to an ftp client. To bad we are forced to use it internally only.
My router doesn't support QAS so I'm stuck there.

For those with routers that does not support QoS settings I found a quick fix, solution provided below is with a DS212+ and DSM 4.0.

Step 1 - Activate DownloadStation, even if you wont use it, just activate it and keep it that way.
Step 2 - In DownloadStation -> Settings -> FTP / HTTP -> Max. download rate per task: 500KB/s (just an example)

Now, all that is going from your DS will (should) be limited. Please test it and report here if you wish.

It's a quick-fix, since will affect all other DS services like photostation etc but at least you have a bit more control over how people are downloading your files.

Let's hope that Synology will include some more bandwidth control in next DSM releases.

This is a good idea. Can you let me know if this will limit only File Station or will it also limit WebDAV which is what I really want to bandwidth shape...

Using download manager to throttle the speed of users connecting to the Disk Station via HTTPS did not work. Does anyone else know any other ways to throttle users speeds. Whenever anyone connects to the disk station they max out the upstream connection and it kills my other internet activities. I tried using QoS on a netgear WNDR4000, but that just allows you to set a priority level and not a specific cap.

I think limit File station is posssible only through QoS on your router, if it support this feature. I have Asus RT-N16 with Tomato firmware on it and works well. I use VOIP phone, so QoS is very usefull.:D.
BTW, my friends strongly prefer FTP access. Because if you have ftp client (Total Commander for example), you can save connection setings and next connections are matter of few seconds. And it is possible to resume download when interrupted. :D

It seems that DSM 4.1 has per application and per user bandwidth limits. This is great!
