Why not the DS111?

Postby Pompous Ass » Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:26 pm

Have not yet purchased a Syno product but am puzzled as to why there is so little discussion in this forum regarding the DS111? I'm leaning that way and wondering what factors I've missed.

Unless you really must have RAID, what do you lose with the 111 vs. the 211? The 111 appears to be equivalent from a performance perspective, more flexible, and less expensive. The performance hit when accessing data from an add-on drive via eSATA looks to be minimal.

So, again, what am I missing?

Nothing. And based on what I have read this forum, many DS211 has loud fan.

I bought DS111 and backup everything to Crashplan. I think this is much better way than DS211 with 2 disks in RAID1 and no "real" backup at all.

Indeed DS111!
I thought about buying the DS211. The only thing I could see as a benefit with DS211 was the extra safety. I am very pleased with my DS111. I always make automatic backup to external drive every 14 days and keep it on another site so the DS111 was definately the right one to choose.

As a sidenote I just upgraded from DS107e which crawled at download/upload speeds of max. 11/11Mb/s.
After upgrading to DS111 and a fast 1TB HD i'm having transfers of 85 MB/s download and 65 MB/s upload! Talk about improvement. Running with no Jumbo frames - i.e. standard network settings on al equipment.
Just as a note I also changed my NIC card to Intel Gigabit CT rather than using the onboard NIC from realtek. That made at huge improvement too.
And for all of those who might be unsatisfied with transfer speeds on these new models think about buying a proper HD. Because you wont get high transferspeeds with lowend HD's. You cannot get transfer speeds of 80-90 MB/s with a low end HD. And if you take a look at the performance specs for Synology's own test they also use proper HD and NIC equipment.
Hope that clarifies something for someone missing details on DS111.

Do you know what chip is used in DS111 as Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver?
Synology USB Station 2 + 2x Samsung S1 Mini 200GB EXT4
DSM 3.2-1944, 5W idle consumption (3.8W+0.6W+0.6W)

Or, you could also have two DS111s and network backup between them. That'd be even better than RAID for redundancy.

Thank you for this Question. I had the exact same thought. Its hard to find much on here about DS111. All the other answers are telling people to go with the RAID, or you need that expansion capability. I’m like really, what am I not seeing. As a home user I think it will be a while before I need 6TB of storage. The eSATA port and the extra USB port seem to be much more useful to me.
I know this thread is old, but I thought it needed a refresh. It was hard to find.
