mark,
I have asked Syno support to give me access to the ftp site to download the DS211 spin patch file synology_88f6282_211.pat and update the DSM : ftp://ftp.synology.com/on-line/DSM3.0/spinup/

Would you recommend doing this or try the Beta version as you propose ?

@soixante4: it does not matter. You can run the synology patch on dsm 3.0 or directly upgrade to 3.1 beta.

HD204UI F4EG orange blinking DS107

Postby falcon » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:41 pm

First: I already patched my new HD204UI succesfully with the samsung patch.
Installing in my oldie DS107 with firmware 2.2-0942 gave orange blinking light.
I then tried formatting to EXT4 (Ubuntu-live-cd). Drive is working but after installing into DS107 no solution.

I therefore upgraded to the latest firmware: DSM 3.0-1354
But still: orange blinking.
Note: Synology assistant cán't find the DS107 and I also can't connect (no webinterface).

I know there's a Syno-patch for spinup problems and also that thatone is incorperated to the 3.1 beta. Could this also be the problem with 1-bay drives?
It might be that my old DS107 can't work with 2TB F4EG HD204UI? Or should I get a support ticket for 1379 patch?

update 14-2-2011:
I disables my firewall and after that Synology Assistant found my DS107.
Also, powered up the HD204UI by external power adapter.
Now in progress updating to DSM 3.0-1354 (fingers crossed).
By using synology assistant it automatically formats the drive (so beware!)

Gentlemen,

I just bought a DS211J. In order to fill its two beautiful bays, I chose to buy HD204UI hard drives.
I had heard many different stories about the quality of the HD204UI, and so decided to give it a shot - after all, they were not too expensive, and 5400RPM was enough for what I intend to do.

As I said, I had heard many different stories. I should have stuck to that of "xcopy": viewtopic.php?f=26&t=27905&start=255#p132288

After 2 days of use, and one of my drives already corrupted data and finally appears to be broken.

I will therefore now return that piece of junk to the shop, and get a real HDD instead.

Yours truly,
A.

I installed my DS211 last night.
I used 2x 12/2010 HD204UI drives and using the defaulty DSM, only 1 drive would show at a time, even after switching them round physically.

The I updated the DSM using the spin patch and now all is working beautifully :)

Created the SHR volume overnight and it should be ready to go.

Hi Cocopops,

I'm in the same situation as you (except I have a DS211j). (see http://59.124.41.244/enu/viewtopic.php? ... =0#p134166)
My drives were made in 12.2010, and I have DSM 3.1 Beta.
Everything seems OK right now (I've created a RAID1 overnight, seems good).
Do you think you'll need to patch your drives with the samsung patch? Is there a way to know for sure if the drive has the faulty firmware or not?

Thanks

To quote myself, and re post this yet again:

Yes you have to contact Synology support

Antoiney from Synology did post the FTP link here, but it may still be a good idea to post a support questions so they can get a count of the issue.

Use the search function, if it ignores you, place a * in front of each word so it does not reject them as too common.
PS: you can join the beta for 3.1 and will have the patch in it.

Cread, I see in the other thread that you just linked (again) to that you mention that the file name of the patch makes a difference...

I tried installing the 1379 patch from that FTP link to set up a new DS211j but I got an error message of "you have selected an installation file incompatible with the system model". I definitely downloaded the correct patch for my model (synology_88f6281_211j.pat). Does the filename have anything to do with why I am getting this error? Should I be renaming the patch or something? I'm stuck :?

I had a version error, that I fixed by adding _1379 to the end of the file name (before the extension). I did not have an issue with model. See more on the patch on that thread I linked to.

To All, to cocopops, to cread,
is there any way to remove the warning message "in the past" for the spin-up time ?

If you read the previous posts, and look at the SMART data, you will see that it tracks the worst result ever recorded. SMART data can only be reset by the manufacture for warranty reasons, so no. We will have to live with it. Instructions were posted here, but we did not follow them to the letter (I am included in that list, I too have the "IN_THE_PAST" badge of shame).

Dear Customer,
Since your drive was made past 11/2010 the patch has already been applied. Therefore you don't need to patch it again. Also your drive should not fail due to a missing patch.
Thank You for choosing Samsung

I had read anecodotal evidence of this on another forum from a person who stress tested three F4EG drives and found that the 12/2010 build did not produce write errors but that the earlier builds did. I'm breathing easier now.

Did the earlier builds produce write errors even with patched firmware?
How do I test my volume to be sure?
Can someone write the procedure for doing the test with telnet/ssh?

Yes, some data recovery companies could do it. It cost cca $12 per drive for me (http://www.data112.cz).
