I've noticed that in general, the iPad exhibits a bit of flakeyness with Airplay, while my iPhone 4 usually works perfectly. One of the symptoms is that the Airplay speaker selection button sometimes just randomly disappears. Toggling wifi off and back on (or airplane mode toggling) restores it for awhile.

I haven't had too much trouble streaming audio from the iPad with Airplay, but video to the AppleTV almost never works. It works beautifully from my iPhone (in supported applications, of course).

I got this answer from Synology Support:

Hello Xavier,

Thank you for your support of Synology.

We are currently investigating the possibility to add AirPlay support for a future release. While I do not have a timeline available at present, you can sign up for our eNews to be notified of updates automatically.

I am sorry if this is not the answer you were looking for, but I do hope it helps.

Well, AirPlay in Audio Station is now officially supported!

But, you can only choose one Airport Express at a time, you can't stream to multiple devices at once :/

You use Audio Station from any computer to stream music to any AirPort Express.

Are you sure this stuff really works ? I haven't got an airport express or apple tv2 yet. So i tried with an airport express emulator (AirReceiver 1.2) on my computer. In audio station i can select it as media renderer (start audio station after starting airreceiver) So audio station seems to see it. But when i try to play a song it looks like it starts playing for half a second and then just stops. So i thought the emulator might not work well. But when i tried to play to the emulator from itunes airplay on another computer it showed up as a speaker and did play.
I also tried playing to the airport express emulator with airfoil and that worked too.
So you are on dsm 3.1-1742 and are sure u can play to an airport express directly from audio station in the browser too airport express ?

Yep, I use it every day :)
Though, a friend of mine says he can play but they audio stops for a while some times.
I guess it could be a network issue. My AP Express is connected wirelessly to my main(5Ghz) wireless network. So it's only used for music streaming.

Airplay will stop for me as well --- everytime, just about 15-17 seconds into a song. BUT - I think it is more of a network issue on my end. I just want to see if others are successful. I am accessing audio station with a wireless laptop, then rendering wirelessly to my AP Express to my home theater system. It's an old linksys router (G)

I have tried Airplay between a 210j and an airport express. Totally unreliable.
It stopped after around 15". After some investigation, I found that the CPU was running at 100%, the cause is documented somewhere in this forum. The process "convert" used to produce thumbnails for photos is eating up all CPU. (a shame IMHO). After killing the process, the CPU is back to a few % usage. The situation improved slightly. Airplay stopped after around 45" to 1'. No problem between iTunes and airport express so I would say it's an issue either with a bad implementation from Synology or the HW is just not powerful enough...

Ditto. No sound after 20-30 seconds, although it still appears to be playing in Audiostation (time seek bar moving along quite happily). When it moves to the next track in the playlist, plays again for 20-30 seconds then silence. I do not believe this is a network performance problem either, it works fine with iTunes.

I also notice that the pause button doesn't actually pause - it has the same effect as 'stop'. Bug or feature?

It must be something on the Synology side and not a network thing --- At least 5 of us are experiancing the exact same thing. Hopefully this will be resolved. Does Synology monitor this forum or how would I inform them of this happening?

I think it might be both network and a bug.
A friend of mine has two AirportExpress. One of them is used as a router among other things and the other one is connected to the existing network. The latter is working just fine for him.

Mine is also only connected to an existing wireless network and works flawlessly :)

PS. No I don't think Synology is visiting the forums frequently, it happens though.
