Deleting files from NAS does not free up space

Postby SweeJ » Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:53 pm

Hello,

I've noticed that whenever I delete files/folders from my Synology DS411+, either through Windows 7 or DiskStation environment, it does not free up space from the NAS. I've tried even emptying recycling bin/folders from my NAS and Windows 7, and yet, deleted many gigabytes worth of space, it does not free up free space. it just keeps showing a constant free space consumption in my DS. since the purchase, the space used has increased from 23% to 27% even though i've deleted tens of gigabytes from my NAS.

I've never had a NAS or set up a RAID before, but is this a typical nature of a NAS or a RAID set up?

is this a bug or is there some "free up space" function i have to run?

Did you checked all trashes ?
If there are several, it could be the problem.
Not later than yesterday, I made about 80gb free-space by emptying some recycling bins.
Ps: make your hidden files appear.

does emptying the Recycling Bin from Windows environment free up space for you? it doesn't do anything for my NAS for me :(

i emptied the CIFS Recycling Bin from the DS software, and it did free up about less than 1% of space, but doesn't seem to reflect the 10's of gigabytes i deleted from my NAS.

any one else having a similar problem to me?

Sometimes this forum is like an empty cave. I'm just a newbie too and have no answer for you, but I'll test on my setup when I have a chance. Alan :?:

Update, I just added and then deleted a 7GB file. Usage was x.99 before and x.89 after, so it went down after deleting the file.

If you delete the files from the recycle bin as well, it should free up space (whether you do this from your Windows OS or in the DSM should not make any difference).

Hello,

I'm a new Synology user, and encountered the same problem.

I had deleted a 5GB directory, and the space didn't seem to free up on the volume (I should have seen "12GB used", but instead it was still displaying "17GB used").

I tried to reboot the Syno, and it solved the issue: now it displays "12GB used"...
I guess there is some sort of random garbage collector, or is it a bug ?

Did you file that to Synology support ?

Best regards
L.S.

Can you check

Control Panel -> Win/MAC/NFS -> Normally you have the Windows File Server enabled.
A couple of options further you will see Enabled CIFS Recycle Bin.

Is this option enabled ?
And if yes, there should be a button called 'Empty CIFS Recycle Bin'. Just click on that one, that should empty your Recycle Bin on the NAS.

Hope this helps .. just give it a shot.

Hello Geert,

On my NAS, the CIFS recycle bin was not enabled.
I even tried to enable it so I can empty it, but with no effect.

The only thing that solved the issue, was to reboot the NAS.

It seems that the original poster tried too to empty the trash of the Syno.

I filed a bug to the support, I'll keep you posted.

I'm not sure at all about that but I supposed that Disktation is a Unix server so when you delete a file, it will be move to .Trash or .Trashes, 2 hidden folders.

I'm on a Mac so I don't know if these folders exist on Windows... Try to see hidden files
