Antoine, THANK YOU (and thank you, Synology) for coming to your collective senses and making the patch publicly available!! :) I've no idea why Synology was so reluctant to do this in the first place--the rationale the company provided made no sense whatsoever. This is a much more responsive, responsible, and customer-friendly way to handle the situation.

To clarify, the same instructions apply in terms of the order of patching, correct? The Samsung drive must be patched separately BEFORE these DSM patches are applied on the Synology?

From what I have read about the issue, this is the correct order. If you try to use the drive without the Samsung patch, you may loose data (it is the nature of the error). If you use the drive before the 1379 Synology build, you may get a permanent blemish in the SMART data in the form of a slow spin up in the past.(Not a problem, but the error will persist if you go looking for it). See THIS THREAD for more on the Samsung patch.

Hi
Updated FW HD204UI using Harry Porter ISO

Where can I get this? Apologies as I am new to nas. I have a new ds211j and await the synology patch. In the meantime I am trying to update the fw on my 2 new HD240UI s. I have the F4EG.exe from samsung but not sure how to get it onto the drives. I now understand it must be done in DOS after booting from DOS. :?

My PCs do not have Floppy DDs. I connected one of the drives via a usb to SATA connector and initialised in from win7. I did a quick format (ntfs) so i could get the F4EG.exe file on it _ but it will not run from an elevated command prompt. Would exFAT format make any difference?

I then tried various utilities to create a bootable DOS cd or usb drive but could not fathom out how to boot and then get to the HD240. Can somone help with a bit of a step by step instruction

thanks

Hi guys, what experience do you have with patched DSM 1379? I can hear that disk 2 sometimes starts on the 2nd attempt (e.g. now the WORST value of the spin_up_time attribute decreased from 68 to 45 on my disk). The threshold limit (25) has not been reached indeed, however, I think the drive powering is still not optimal.

Thanks harry Potter for the iso link - worked fine on both drives. Had to get into the pc though - It wasnt having it via a usb to SATA link externally. Now just waiting for Synology to see if there is also a spin up Patch needed for the DS211j.
Incidentally, how did you get from the F4GE.exe (i think) from samsung to the HD204UI.EXE you bundledwith the boot iso. Would the samsung file have self extracted in DOS or something? Those HD204UIs are super quiet btw
Thanks again

As far as I remember Samsung renamed the patch later on. May be it was also me, not sure though.

Thanks harry Potter for the iso link - worked fine for me on both drives! (Y)
Thanks matts22 for your plan to remove the "in_the_past" labeling.

Everything used to be fine. No "in_the_past" labeling. Patched 2 disks. Except the darn thing failed to spin up right after I patched my 2 disks. Updated the DSM but Disk2 is now labeled "in_the_past" at the spin up time.

Question:
How bad is the "in_the_past" labeling?

Hi there all,

nbaner wrote:...... The installation went OK but at the end the DS211 rebooted and I got a notification in Synology Assistant "Abnormal shutdown" which could be normal. Not sure if anyone has got this notification. After update the version showed 3.0-1379 so it did get updated.

......

I patched both my HDD's 4 days ago due to the "Samsung Spinpoint F4EG HD204UI 2TB compatibility?" topic.
I did not notice this topic until it was mentioned over there. I have read this topic and contacted Synology Tech Support. They advised me yesterday to patch DSM (ds211+) with 1379. It patched, rebooted and worked fine all day. Nightly backup ....all ok

All went fine until this morning....apparently after coming out of hibernation this morning it gave me an ""Abnormal shutdown".....
So in other words; the 211+ tried to wake up from hibernation and in this process it rebooted. After logging on, it gave the warning "Abnormal shutdown" notification.

Any ideas on what is going on?
I will monitor the situation and hope and pray it doesn't happen again. :?

Ok, so just got my 1511+, should I install the 1354 first, then this patch, or can I just go straight to the patch? Eh...I'm sure it's not a major time killer to do 1354 first, no biggie, so I guess I'll just do it that way. But for future reference for others, could you just go straight to the patch? I don't really like referring this as a "patch", to me a patch is a small file that patches a larger one. This is just a specific update for F4 users.

Edit: OK, that was easy enough. I updated the firmware on all the drives first, put in 1 drive, put the 1354 on it, logged into it and did the update from there and pointed at the patch file, that was even quicker. Then put the rest of the drives in and started the build now.

However, I was wondering...is it possible to apply this patch before installing the hard drives to avoid the "in_the_past" SMART labeling on my hard drives? Or do I need the hard drives installed to access DSM? What if I used a different hard drive to apply the patch?

Thanks!

I just wanted to give everyone an update, as I was able to install two new HD204UI hard drives in my new DS211 with no SMART errors or "in_the_past" labeling.

Here is the process that I used after piecing together info from this forum and Synology tech support (hopefully someone will find this useful):

1. Made boot CD with Samsung patch using the .iso file made by HarryPotter, found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=27905&start=150
2. Disconnected computer hard drive and connected sata and power cables to Samsung hard drive, booted computer with CD, applied patch, shut down computer, and repeated for second hard drive
3. Put a blank spare hard drive (seagate 2.5" 160GB from an old laptop in my case) in DS211 and installed DSM 3.0 on this hard drive
4. Downloaded patch from Synology - had some trouble here but figured out my router was not port forwarding for FTP (still have to get that working), so I connected directly to the broadband modem and had no problem
5. Installed Synology patch on the spare hard drive via DSM update and shut down DSM
6. Installed Samsung drive in the other slot of the DS211 and restarted DSM
7. Opened storage manager within DSM and created a SHR (synology hybrid raid) volume using the spare drive and Samsung hard drive - this was about 150GB in my case
8. Shut down DSM, replaced the spare drive with the second Samsung drive, restarted DSM
9. Noted the SHR volume was degraded within storage manager and turned off the annoying beep
10. Clicked manage, selected second hard drive, and DSM automatically rebuilt the SHR and expanded the volume to 1.79TB

Now, everything looks great and both drives show no SMART errors. I'll be back with questions if anything changes. Hopefully Synology can get this back on the compatible hard drive list. Good luck to everyone!

Does this process wipe out all the data on your samsung drives?

So far nothing to report....no mistery reboot or power faillure. I guess it had nothing to do with the patch or ds211+...it's more likely that there was a small power fluctuation in the area where I live.....that was severe enough to reboot the Synology and not my computer and other electronics.

Hi have Just read this post and your post and downloaded the patch synology_88f6281_211j.pat from the link ftp://ftp.synology.com/on-line/DSM3.0/spinup/ It saves it on my PC as synology_88f6281_211j_1354.pat

I am currently running DSM 3 v 1354 but when I try updating it with this patch file it says unable to perform DSM update because this DSM is an older version. Not sure why this is but noticed a poster who renamed the file to 1374. Was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they did to get round it. Thanks

PS I have done the patches to the Samsung Disks

I think the spinup patch for the 211j is 1379. It downloads with no _xxxx.pat part of the filename. (with xxxx being the number)
I had 1354 on first and after installing the HD204UI I then I ran the patch and after the status reported 1379

After playing for a while I did a factory restore and when I tried to install from the CD or the latest on the synology site (1354) it said no way you must install 1379 or later.
You cannot just rename 1354 to 1379 - tried that and it bombed during the install. I thought I was screwed but I then renamed the spinup patch by adding _1379 and installed from scratch and it was fine.

So I suggest you rename your spinup to _1379 and try that
Good luck

Ahhh my mistake had tried to do the patch from the original 1354 patch file not the spin up one. The one downloaded has now installed ok and is showing up as 1379 2nd drive currently formatting so far no spin up errors will see what happend when Raid set up fully!
