On the 410j, using DSM 3.0-1354, open the Storage Manager and click on the HDD Management tab. A list of the drives in your NAS will appear (one of which should be highlighted). Click on the Cache Management button and a dialog box will appear with some explanatory text and a checkbox reading: "Enable write cache". Click on the checkbox to clear the checkmark. Then, click the OK button on the dialog box to confirm the change.

I only had to do this for one drive to turn off write caching for all four drives in my RAID array. It can't hurt, though, to select each drive in the list and hit the Cache Management button, just to verify that write caching has been turned off on each drive.

Hope this helps...

Does any of the members in this thread has an estimate on the ETA of the fix by Samsung?

In any case I do believe that Synology should give us an official answer as to whether we are safe only by disabling the write cache or by not using the SMART test tools.

Of course their products are not the root of the problem but given that they are involved it would not hurt, at least in my opinion.

I spoke to a very nice guy at Samsung's NJ Drive Division earlier today (phone: 201-935-0670).
They are aware of the problem -- but he had no idea how long a "fix" would take.

I pointedly asked him if we were talking about a matter of 3 or 4 weeks -- and he doubted it.
He implied maybe early 2011 -- but stressed there were too many factors to know for sure.
I got the impression there was a separate entity responsible for firmware development -- and their progress was impossible to "track".

What is certain, though, is that 18 - 2TB Spinpoint drives are being shipping back to NewEgg this week.
Unfortunately, I cannot wait -- hoping for a firmware fix that may or may not happen in a reasonable amount of time.
I have no real assurance that this is a "surmountable" problem -- although it may very well be.
And, I cannot risk or undermine the integrity of my data -- with a temporary workaround ...
...Especially when I can't predict the outcome of this situation.

Of course, now the question is:

What is the most dependable and reliable 2TB drive for DS1010+ integration?

This post has already been monitoring since earlier last week; your concerns have been noted, and our engineering teams are looking at whether if disabling the write cache or by other means would address your concerns.

There's no announcement made yet, but it'll be as soon as Synology have any progress.

Thank you.

Thanks for the update. It's a bit late IMHO, as I wrote earlier in this thread:
1. The harddrive was silently removed from the compatibility list and it wasn't added to the list of drives that's not recommended.
2. Maybe it's just me (not a customer yet, but about to buy a DS1010+), but I haven't been able to find any official statement from Synology anywhere? You have a blog but nothing there and there's nothing in the announcement sub forum.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you'd really be helping out your customers if you had a mailinglist or similar where you announced such things. How many people have bought this samsung drive and have it running in a Synology NAS and not aware of this risk? When you became aware of this issue and removed the drive from the compatibility list, you really should have notified your customers and made a post somewhere easily found on your website.

Wonderful... I checked compatibility list before to order a DJ411J and 3 DH204UI drives. It took two weeks before to send my order because the DJ411s was not available on the shop, and now that my order have been processed and the items have been sent, i learn that the disks are not compatible anymore ! Greeeaaaat !
Can you please give me some information : "The Samsung HD204UI has chance to read/write error when processing reading SMART information and write to disk simultaneously"
Is the synology box reading this info automatically or can it only occurs if i use manually the smartctl command ? If it is the case, i think i will never need to use it.
Other question : it seems some of you are already using these disks for months now... Any of you really had problems ?
Thanks for your help,
Fred

Hi all,

I'm one of the *lucky* ones who bought 5 of these drives for my DS1010+ before they were removed from the list, so I'm certainly interested to get this sorted.
In looking around I've found this link on the Samsung site - http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=386

Is this the solution to our concerns ?

The german magazine c't did test it in their labs (I think it was c't that has detected the bug).
Result: The problem is gone with the patched firmware.

There is info I need any bootable media with DOS. I have no FDD in my computers (with WinXP and Win7).
What is the most easy way instead? By CD or USB?
How to manage it? I checked google and found many info. What about your experience? What is the best method? What tools should I use to have bootable USB with DOS?

Another question. How to best manage this procedure in my Syno? Just shut it down, unplug HDD's, upgrade HDD's firmware, plug them again and turn Syno on? Is it so easy?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance

I made a bootbale CD from a free DOS iso and added the exe:
http://madphilosopher.ca/2010/04/dell-l ... so-master/

Yes:
Shut down Syno. Extract disk. Add to external host system that is able to boot from the cd. Flash, Reinstall disk into Syno.
