Large hard drives

Postby brucexx » Wed Oct 13, 2010 5:50 pm

hi,

Has anybody heard about any new large hard drives and when they will be released ? I am looking for anything bigger than 2T, I found one storage device with 3T drive but the drive cannot be bought separately ... go figure...

Thanks

hi brucexx,

seagate has announced to be introducing 3TB disks at the end of the year and WD will introduce a 3TB caviar green disk somewhere this month. if these disks are/will be compatible with the synoboxes. I would expect so but will have to wait and see.

good to hear that - only 3T that is only 50% increase from 2T - slackers...

Hope we have them soon and I hope they will not be too expensive.

Thanks

Continuing this post - has anybody heard anything about bigger drives 4T or 5T coming anytime soon. To be honest 3T is not that big jump from 2T.

Thanks

Heh - anything new, and in this case groundbreaking, is doomed to be expensive (to begin with). Give it another year or so, maybe competition will bring the price down.

It is considered groundbreaking to go larger than 2 TB because several hardware and software restrictions exist, which the manufacturers had to deal with. It was not as simple step as going from 1 to 2 TB.

instead of increasing disk size why not increase the number of disks.. so scale out instead of scale up.. the DS1010 + DX510 looks like a nice option filled with 2TB (or 3TB disks) :D

The 710+ can also handle the DX510 and I agree it's not a cheap option. However the earlier quote still applies so budget wise it might be cheaper to scale out. In my experience it's more cost efficient to use more common technology instead of the latest also from a stability perspective. "leading edge" can easily become "bleading edge" when using the latest technology.

I understand your point and so do companies making the drives (I hope :-)) - the jump form 2T to 3T for me is not much (1T is about 6 months). I will not buy the 3T if it is crazy expensive I think nobody would unless it is mission critical. Why would you buy a 3T drives if you could buy 2 or 3 2T drives in the same price.

I hope the manufacturers will see that but I have been wrong before :-)

Thanks

309 USD doesn't sound too bad. I am positively surprised.

I agree cfuttrup, anything like that will be way to expensive. Like with most technology though the price will eventually go down. As much as I would like a 3 TB, I don't think I would be able to get one for a while after they came out.
