I will be purchasing the new Samsing HD204UI hdd today and test it on my 210j box. Will keep everyone posted on how it goes.
I've got a good feeling about this drive given my previous experience with Samsungs previous 2tb hdd model hd203wi.

I'm also using two Samsung Spinpoint F4EG 2TB HD204UI/Z4 disks in a non-raid setup in my DS-207+ and haven't encountered any problems yet. Very silent and cool disks - also an improvement compared to my older Samsung Spinpoint HD103UJ disks.

So far so good for me as well. Bought 5 HD204UI disks today. Currently in the process of replacing my older HD103UJ in Raid 5 on a DS509+. I am about halfway through "repairing" (re-syncing) the first disk and everything runs smooth. The calculated time is about 6h per disk.
I will post any problems If and when I find them.

Niko, I am curious how it worked out with your 210J?

I have installed 2 HD204UI in my DS210j. I created the volume as "Standard", I guess I should have done Raid 1, but I'm still not sure what the difference is. The only thing I'm reading is that to use standard when the drives are a different size. So does that mean I screwed up by using standard for two identical drives?
I updated to dsm 3.0 after I created the volume, and everything, so far, seems to be ok. I created a shared folder, but haven't loaded anything to it yet, so I'm sure that'll be the real test, right?
The drives are quiet.

I installed 2 x HD204UI in my 210+ running RAID1 currently copying data to it.
Everything looks fine so far.

"Standard" is like RAID1 plus... some little extra magic from Synology ;)
If you were looking to have a RAID1 system, you don't need to worry, just go on with your first tests.

The 'extra magic' becomes useful if you have disks of different sizes, but it doesn't substantially
disturb operations if you have two equal disks.

Hi.
I replaced my dlink 323 with the 210j. I've 2 of these drives, raid 1. It took about 8 hours or so to format both of them. I average about 5MByte/sec write speed. Is there an easy way to tell if the 4k block alignment is affecting write speeds, or if the nas is actually formatted it with the 4k blocks aligned?

Love the features on this box. Really impressive.

Does the 4kb sector size of this disk affect the performance when used with Synology products ??

Yes, it has been reported that a 4kb-sector disk not properly formatted has a sensisbly lower I/O throughput.

The formatting is done by my DS210+. How to know if this is done "properly" ?

It involves logging on the NAS via ssh/telnet and issuing the command 'fdisk -lu'
Please search some of the old threads (they are related to WD disk and Advanced Format, but anyhow...)
to see all the whats and whys and hows.
