DS410 does not detect Smart UPS 750

Postby shinank » Thu Sep 23, 2010 2:37 am

My DS410 does not detect my APC Smart UPS 750.

I am running DSM 3.0 1337

The System Information Screen shows USB Device - UPS - American Power Conversion
But "There is No UPS Connection" is on the UPS tab in the Power section of the Control Panel

dmesg output is:

Any help getting my UPS recognized is appreciated. Thanks!

I regret to say I have the same problem with the same UPS (APC Smart-UPS 750VA LCD 230V (SMT750I)). We're running the same version of DSM (3.0 1337) but we're using a DS1010+. With more than 90 minutes runtime it's not too big of a problem, but of course it would be much better to have this issue solved.

I am glad I am not the only one. And I agree with you 100%. The only reason I bought this UPS is because it is on the compatibility list.

Same here, but I think there is a problem interpreting that (rather short) list. There are a couple of APC models with similar names. It might be a good idea for Synology to mention the manufacturer code as well...

After looking into the matter there appears to be an older model with the same name, but it doesn't have the LCD-display. Its manufacturer code is SUA750I, opposed to SMT750I, which is considered the successor model by APC. So the compatibility list probably is mentioning the older model.

Which version do you have? I presume the newer one, but just to make sure.

Yea you are probably right. I'll grab the code when I get home this evening and post it to confirm your suspicion.

Same issue: This started with the beta and now with 1337. It was not a problem before I upgraded from 2.3

The difference between SMT750I and SMT750 (without the "I" at the end) is the SMT750I is the European (230V) version with IEC 320 C13 connectors, and the SMT750 is the US (120V) version with NEMA 5-15R connectors.

Maybe my usage of "European" and "US" version description is not entirely geographically correct, but it should cover the bulk of 'reality'. :)

I don't think APC uses different ways of USB communication for both units though.

Not sure if this is related to the same issues you guys are experiencing. I tried a APC Back UPS CS 500 which was detected by mu DS410 and presented me with all the options related to the UPS. However, when the mains power was cut the DS410 did not enter Safe Mode and it did not shut down. I am running DSM 3.0 1337

Im waiting for Synology and APC support to respond. Ive also asked APC if the ES 550's USB interface should be the same as the ES 500 (which is listed as being compatible by Synology). APC doesnt list Synology as a supported brand in their website though

The problem you mention seems unrelated.

Did you ever test your UPS runtime? After a couple of years the batteries need to be replaced. Or batteries can become defective before their expiry date. The Smart UPS series test their batteries on a regular basis. To my knowledge the Back UPS series does not (by itself).

since update to 3,0 my Synology doesnt detect my APC smart 750UI (europe model)

I can confirm DSM 3.0-1354 does not solve this issue.

However I think it's on Synology's 'radar'. Hopefully they will support it in the near future.

Thanks for the updates. It is good to know that at least Synology is aware of the problem.

I had problems with my ups disappearing and getting the "There is No UPS Connection" message on my ds410. It seems to be fixed since I disabled the usb drive hibernation.

Control Panel -> Power -> General Settings tab.

Set the USB hard disk hibernate time to "none".

Worth a try.
