If you use iSCSI you can dedicate a given amount of space. Should work with TM.

That's what I've done. But since TM is a feature of DSM it should work with quotas. As all other NAS do (QNAP, ReadyNAS). ESPECIALLY since they just launched the new DSM.

- create a shared folder
- set a disk quota for that shared folder (e.g. 200Gb)
- tell the Time Machine on the Mac to use that folder.
(Just make sure that the recycle bin on NAS is deactivated

aarfing wrote:Well, it's been working on my NAS for ages. I created a folder called "timemachine" and then a user called "timemachine" who only has access to the "timemachine"-folder and whos quota has been set to 200GB. I then use that user to log onto my NAS from TimeMachine on my mac and it works like a charm. When the 200GB is reached it starts to remove old files just as expected.
It might not be as simple as checking some "make TimeMachine work automatically"-checkbox in the DSM, but it's pretty simple

I'm doing exactly the same as you describe, but when I look in TM preferences it says that the entire NAS is available. Does yours also say that when not backing up? I haven't gotten close to the quota I set for the user Timemachine, so I can't say what happens there. Would I be able to change the quota just to see what happens with TM, then change it back, or would that mess us TM?
BTW, I use automountmaker to log in my user.
