Changing Download Directory in transmission

Postby rob_c » Fri Aug 20, 2010 11:06 pm

i ve used sarav spk pack and guide to install transmission, which was very helpfull. I now want to change the download directory but i know nothing about the linux folder structuring, so dont know what to change the folder to so i have permission to write to it.
i ve created a folder under SDM/privileges/shared folder and named it torrents and given the relevant permissions. I wanted to be able to save to download torrents to here. i tried changing the directory "in transmission" to the following but i dont have permissions
/Torrents
/var/Torrents

Also after changing to an invalid directory i can no longer start transmission service.

What is the actual directory i should be using as i am lost. any help would be appreciated.

my default directory is /var/services/homes/User/transmission .......transmission and everything works fine when in use.

I have also tried the directory

/volume1/Torrents

Transmission still produces the error "permission denied"

Give this a try..

* Stop the Transmission service
* SSH to your NAS as root
* cd /volumeX/@appstore/transmission/var # where X is which volume it's on, often 1
* vi settings.json
* modify the download-dir line to change the download destination. Alternatively, you can break the downloads into complete and incomplete by setting incomplete-dir to where you want incomplete torrents to go, and incomplete-dir-enabled to true.
* setting the watch-dir directory will let you upload to a particular directory (typically 'incoming') and transmission will scan that dir for new .torrent files, and add them when they appear.
* save the settings.json file
* make sure the directories you specify exist, and are read/write capable by user transmission
* Run the Transmission service

Synology uses 'busybox', which saves space but has a pretty reduced commandset, and it looks like the only editor you get is vi, so if you don't know vi it'll be a good opportunity to learn!

thanks for the help. but i have tried all of that it. Its the directories to change it to, that i am unsure about.
I think i tried chaning all the file paths, manually in the settings file but as i dont know the linux folder locations I dont know what to change them to. I can change it in tranmission remote. as it is now is
/var/services/homes/user/transmission

ideally i wanted to use the a Samba shared folder as /Torrents but the ways i ve typed it below in my other posts they didnt work.
