Synology forces Quicken 2009 to rename file?

Postby kjarrett » Sat Oct 10, 2009 7:51 pm

About a day into ownership of my new DS-109 and I continue to be impressed ... had a bonafide issue today though. Using Quicken 2009, my datafile appears to have been renamed due to some sort of 8.3 filename/path limitation.

The file I use is called QDATA2008.QDF and it's located in this folder:

Z:\\My Documents\kjarrett\Quicken

When I opened the file with Quicken, I noticed it had been renamed. It otherwise worked fine.

I then decided to try to open the original file - the one I knew to be correct - but it failed to load and spawned many Quicken errors.

See below:

#3 in that list is/was the correct file name.

#2 is what it was 'translated' to. I can see the 8.3 compatible naming convention.

#1 was totally corrupt and unusable (spawns errors in Quicken).

#4 you can ignore, it was just me experimenting.

The odd part is, if I look in the folder, I see the correct filename (QDATA2008), not the renamed version above.

What gives? Is the Synology changing the path so that it is 8.3 compliant or ???

Thanks, kj

I would look into Quicken renaming it, rather than Synology. Every application I have tried opens a file using the full filename.

Quicken might be playing smart with file locations. If the hard-drive is not NTFS or FAT32 formatted, perhaps it defaults to reading files as 8.3, it's generic and safer option.

I'd be interested to see what happens if you open a file from a USB drive. Does Quicken rename to 8.3 in this scenario?

I have been a Quicken user for greater than 10 years and am presently using Quicken Deluxe 2008 on Windows XP. I also use a Synology DS207+ and have had that device for more than 2 years and greatly enjoy the capabilities. My wife and I store all of our commonly accessed files on this and use workstations throughout the house. I have had no issues with Quicken naming until a week ago when I updated the Synology Disk Station Manager software to V 2.2. Since then, my standard file name convention in the format of "Year 2010" is converted to "YLUGTH~3".

I contacted Synology tech support and after sending my device log was informed that this is a Quicken issue. I disagree and can't get Synology to respond any further to my requests. The device is great, the support is disappointing! This issue does not appear to be a Quicken incompatibility. Synology should review the Disk Station Manager software and help resolve this.

Status update.

Just downloaded and installed firmware V 2.3-1157 and the Quicken filename issue has been resolved, at least in Quicken 2008. My file named "Year 2010" opens without issue or filename conversions.

Thank you Synology for correcting this issue.
