HELP! server shut down abnormally

Postby eurochez » Fri Jul 30, 2010 1:51 am

Dear user,
server suffered from power failure and was shut down abnormally.
Sincerely,
Synology DiskStation

My DS410 is shutting itself down once every 36 hours at seemingly random times of the day and night and this has already corrupted one of my Time Machine backup sparsebundles and I think it's only been luck that my primary data has not been affected.

The system logs don't mention anything though since it's been occurring for the past 2 weeks and for the past 2 weeks its been particularly hot in Hong Kong I am wondering whether the unit is overheating and turning itself off...is there an inbuilt cut-off mechanism? If not I am guessing I need to warranty repair this unit as it's only 3 months old!

Anyone out there with similar issues?

Greetings Raf,

The inbuilt cut-off mechanism only triggers unless the system temperature is reached to 70°C as it will shut down to prevent damage or reduced service life. What's the environmental temperature and the CPU temperature where you can monitor this figure from Web UI >> Information >> Status? Please check if there's any other messages besides the messages of abnormal shutdown in the Information >> Log message. Any aware beeping before the DiskStation turned down?

Thank you.

Hi there antoiney

Actually I don't think it's the system temperature then as the webUI lists the estimated CPU temperature as 46 °C / 115 °F and the only message the system log tells me is "System booted up from an improper shutdown". Also there's no beeping before the abnormal shutdown.

I am also now getting the Volume 1 status as "crashed" though I have managed to reboot and am copying off all my data, will do a factory reset and install from scratch and see if that helps.

Mine is doing this also, did you work out how to fix it as it is becoming very annoying and unreliable, I keep having to race back from the office to turn it back on. It started when we had a power cut and it was forced to shut down abnormally. Any help would be much appreciated

Unfortunately I couldn't figure out what the issue was so I backed up my data and did a factory reset...bit annoying but Synology support suggested as much themselves.

As regards the device powering down, there is an option in the firmware to have the device automatically turn back on after power failure/shutdown...will this solve you having to go back to the office to turn the device on?

I'm having the exact same problem with periodic abnormal shutdowns (every 3 days or so) without any mention in the log other than "shut down abnormally" - also with a DS410.
I have set up mail notifications on the diskstation and hget the following short message after every reboot:
Dear user,

DS410 suffered from power failure and was shut down abnormally.

Sincerely,
Synology DiskStation

I started happening while I was still using DSM 2.3 and I'm now seeing the same pattern with DSM 3.0

Did the factory reset solve anything for you?

I can see that this thread is also read by someone from Synology. If you have any debugging tools I can run to provide more info, I'll be happy to assist with this. I have created a support ticket (ID: #54715) on this issue.

Peter

Sorry to hear you're having issues too - I did a factory reset and got rid of the drive that first started causing the issues (the DS410 reported a SMART error on Disk 3 just before it started continually rebooting). Now the unit runs perfectly.

Hi Raf,

Thanks for the response. I did also run an extended SMART on all four discs but did not detect anything. I'll try the factory reset.

I am also seeing shutdowns on my RS409+

On three occations it has unexpectedly shut down, been offline for exactly 29 minutes and the rebooted. This has happened in July - October 2010.

There has been no power failure.
There has been no overheating
There has not been any heavy load

Why does it shut down and why is it off for 29 minutes? (A failing power-supply should have either died completly or just failed for a second.)

The server is at a colocation in a VERY controlled environment - warehouse of one of the big international hosting companies. UPS, cooling and SNMP-log on power-supplies. (There has been no power-downs). Temperature is controlled. The server has 4 2TB disks and is only used to receive rsync dumps from our main office as an offsite backup.

I log uptime remotely via SNMP from main office.

Apart from the three shutdowns it has had no issues.

My DS411+ is doing the same thing. Worked fine with the DSM 3.0 BETA (except USB Network Dongle) -- now the DS is freezing (disk lights out, power light on) ... somethings the DS411+ simply shuts down and reboots (every 2-3 days) and other times the DS411+ is "freezes" (e.g., hard disk lights on, power lights on, status green) -- but I have to powerdown via pulling the plug out (unit refuses to shutdown by holding down power button -- it starts to flash - and NEVER STOPS flashing). Very annoying... and has not bee reliable for the past 4-6 weeks.

Gut feeling is this is related to DSM 3.0 release?

I really don't feel like doing a Factory Reset -- just purchased unit in 8/2010 --- PITA.

Hmmz, i experience the same issue since 2 weeks ago.

Situation is like this:

1 DS410 with:

4x 1.5TB Samsung harddisk Ecogreen
1x 1.5TB Samsung Story drive on USB

The DS is hooked up on power and to 1 1Gbit switch.

Beginning of last week i received an error on drive 3, and i've tested that disk with the build in smart test and while testing the NAS station went out sending an mail with that it had been shutted down improperly due to an power failure i'v checked the logs nothing there ran the drive check again and same thing happenend.

When checking the logs again still nothing was in there, i've upgrade the software to the latest available version (1340) after that it ran fine for a few days and it succesfully tested the 3rd drive marking it OK.

Just to be sure i've tested the other drives also and that marked disk 1 as bad. I've replaced that with a new one and started to repair my volume today, and this morning while rebuilding it just rebooted again.....

The NAS is positioned in my electric cabinet in my house with plenty of room and ventilation space, it's not getting to hot, i'm living in Holland and its about 10 degrees celsius here now so what could be the culprit.....

Really would like an explanation for it. I haven't made a ticket yet.

Ok, since my last post my DS410 didnt shut down anymore. But jsut 30 minutes ago it happened again. Again due to a power failure. Will check the logs when i get home.

hi all,

I did file a ticket and sent the appropriate logfiles, etc. I was told to FIRST remove the power from the UPS device to see if the problem went away -- it did not -- continued to get abnormal power shutdown errors every 18-36 hours.

I was then told to TURN OFF HDD (Disk) hibernation --- I did this and my DS411+ was okay for about 6 days -- and then I received another abnormal power shutdown. Continuing to monitor the situation ... not sure if this is a power supply issue/flaw or possible related to HDD hibernation.

NOTE: I also have received TWO errors about the DS411+ not synchronizing with the time.nist.gov (time server). Not sure if this has anything to do with the abnormal power shutdown issues.

Keep you posted on outcome.

Well, i'm gonna file a ticket also 2 day, because my DS410 is also still randomly failing while running. It has nothing to do with the hibernation mode of the harddrive because i don't have that enabled.

Filing a ticket while you read this, i hope the support can find something out.

Hi all,

I just wanted to post a follow-up on my report dated October 10th on this problem:
In parallel with the posting here, I also raised a support ticket with Synology. Synology got remote access to my system and did some log file investigation. This did not immediately reveal the nature of the problem, but Synology suspected it to be a problem with my Power Supply and then then shipped a new Power Supply for me to test on. I have now been using the new power supply for more than three weeks and have not seen any further shut down incidents (they used to happen every 2-3 days). I therefore conclude that the issue was in fact related to this.
Support from Synology has been very constuctive and they did manage to solve the problem. So to anyone else experiencing the same issue: this may be the place to look.

Best regard,

Peter
