OS X - Safari + Firefox 2 or 3RC3 - cannot update firmware

Postby kiyyto » Tue Jun 17, 2008 4:31 pm

I've tried 5 times and cannot get either Safari or Firefox (2 or 3 RC3) to complete the update firmware from version 6.34 to 6.37.
The browser stalls every time.
Anyone else having this problem?

Is there another way to update from 6.34B to 6.37?

Where is located your .pat file ?? It must not be on the Syno; It must be on your local HDD.
Synology Model: DS-411+
Firmware Version: 4.1-2668
HDD Model: 4xSeagate ST2000DL003 2To - SHR

yeah, true... it is on my desktop.
I don't know why I'm having this prob... going to try and download it again.

Are you using archive manager to extract it from the .zip file?
When I use archive manager it splits apart into 5 or 6 different files, instead of the .pat file.
I tried using a freeware util to unarchive it and that created the .pat file, but still the browsers hang when I try to update the firmware.

I'll try downloading again.

Exactly the same over here. I used The Unarchiver to unpack the zip file, and I can't install it (Safari, Firefox). I also booted into XP and tried it via IE 7, no success (although it was exactly the same file, no different unarchiver). It always worked in the past using exactly the same software... My box was still on 590, so I try to upgrade to 598 first (a bit later, the download is so slow right now). The (retranslated) error message is: driver buffer could not be assigned).

edit: I tried 636 as well as 637 - same problem

yep...
I'm not so surprised.

I booted into XP, but couldn't get IE to connect to the NAS.
I've tried to upgrade the firmware so many times it may be borked.

I tried Opera and that didn't work either.

So, I'm out of ideas.

- I got the download station back by powering down the box and restarting it, but still haven't been able to upgrade the firmware.

@all

Please post screen shots (see sig link with regards to posting images) of your error, or describe the error message.

If you receive the buffer error, please try the following

1. Restart the system before executing the upgrade
2. Set the JumboFrames to 1500
3. Disable all other services, such as Web, Php, MySQL, FTP, Multimedia Streaming, iTunes
4. If you are using 3rd party software, disable or remove it from the Synology system before executing the upgrade.
5. Use Firefox 2 or IE7 to execute your upgrade
5a. Safari 3x cannot upgrade firmware versions running firmware 590 or older

If attempting to redownload the file, and it is slow from the Synology HQ servers, please look at the mirror thread.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your advice! I planned to try it without third party software installed anyway and that worked! A straightforward 'ipkg remove * -force-depends" cured my box. No reboot necessary, using FF3 on Mac OSX 10.5.3 - I'll try to kernel panic it now... ;)

I still haven't got it to work and I don't understand the 'ipkg remove' language... is that something I'd be able to type into terminal and update that way?

I did get another copy of the firmware, but haven't had success yet.
I don't have any third party software on my machine.

I'l keep trying.

Oh, and I nearly forgot I turned off jumbo frames, i.e. set it to 1500 (like Franklin recommended). Have you tried that?

You won't have to uninstall packets if you never installed any. ;)

Yes, Jumbo frames are off/set to 1500.

I don't know what the problem is. Updating to Firmware 2.64 was no problem.
For some reason Safari is getting hung up and never gets past the 'transferring data to the server'... I've waited ten minutes and still nothing.

I will try in windows when I have the opportunity, but thank you for your suggestions.

I also had problems updating to latest firmware, using firefox 3.
After shutting down 3-rd party software and switching to internet explorer, the update could be installed without a glitch.

Hopes this helps anyone.

PS: Bittorrent speed is great
