DS212 hibernates when set to NOT hibernate

Postby DSK » Mon Mar 19, 2012 11:25 pm

Synology DS212 NAS
2 x Seagate ST2000DL003 2TB Green drives
Using Synology SHR raid
DMS 3.2

I bought this NAS a few weeks ago, set it up with defaults and didn't activate any other functions except for installing/activating LMS 7.7
The default hibernate period for the disks was 20 minutes and the NAS would seem to go to sleep OK (all lights off except the slow flashing power light).
I changed the hibernate period to 60 minutes and ticked the Deep Sleep box. Most mornings (but not all) the NAS would power down (the log shows 'preparing to power down...' messages at 7:08am) with no lights on at all.
I then unticked the Deep Sleep box but the NAS still fully powers down most mornings at about the same time.
I decided NOT to have the NAS hibernate, so I set the HDD hibernate time to 'none'. This seemed to work as the NAS didn't power down for 5 days. However, on the sixth morning I noticed the display on my SqueezeBox was blank and sure enough the NAS had fully powered down again. Again, the log shows it happened at 7:08am.

There are NO scheduled power on/off entries and never have been. WOL is set to be on. I can fire the NAS back up from my wife's Win7 laptop but don't want my wife starting up and playing with the Synology software to wake up the NAS. I have created users and shared folders on the NAS so that my wife can write to some areas (backup folder) but not to others (master photos folder). The access restrictions work fine but the NAS doesn't show in My Computer (Network) on her laptop when its asleep so she can't access it.

Any ideas why the DS212 fully powers down (but not every day) when set to not hibernate? How can I stop this?

I upgraded to DSM 4, left HDD Hibernation set to 'none' and left Deep Sleep unticked, and 2 days later the DS212 has powered itself down again.

Sometimes it powers down after 8 hours, sometimes 1 day, sometimes 2 days, and one time 6 days!!

Each time it shuts down there are no errors or messages in the logfile other than:
15:17:19 Server started counting down to shutdown.
15:17:27 Windows file service was stopped.

System health is reported as GOOD, there are no disk problems or temp problems ...

Is this faulty hardware or is it the firmware?

Any ideas?

I ended up contacting Synology and sending them the kernel log. They replied that my DS212 was 'corrupted' and needed to be returned.

Because I had the case number from Synology and it had had this problem since day 1, PC Case Gear were great and arranged for me to pick up a brand new unit when I dropped off the faulty one. The new one has been running for 4 days now without shutting down once.

Before removing the HDD's from the faulty unit I did a configuration backup via Synology Assistant. After fitting the HDD's to the replacement unit and powering it up, Synology Assistant prompted that the volume was recoverable and automatically recovered it in a couple of minutes. I didn't lose any data or need to redo shares or drive mappings on machines etc. Quite painless.
