DSM 5.0-4458 Update 2 bricked my DS112j

Postby cloudxix » Thu Apr 10, 2014 4:33 am

I received the notice that DSM 5.0-4458 Update 2 was available for update.

I performed the automatic update and it bricked my DS112j.

Next step is to manually update, since the Synology Assistant is displaying Status: Migratable

Unfortunately, DSM 5.0-4458 Update 2 is not available anywhere for manual download. For that matter, neither is DSM 5.0-4458 Update 1.

The only download available is the very defective DSM 5.0-4458.

*EDIT* - as others have noted, the Update-1 and Update-2 patches are available here:
http://ukdl.synology.com/download/criti ... ck/4458-2/

...but DS Assistant will not load them to my unit...

My DS112j is bricked, with the latest updates only available to working systems. Very very VERY disappointed.

Will now attempt to format and install and restore 4TB system :-(

Upgrade from DSM 4.3 to 5.0... bricked

Postby kcconnor » Thu Apr 10, 2014 6:10 am

I have a DS211j that was happily running DSM 4.3.

In light of the recent OpenSSL security bug that made headlines on April 8th, I upgraded everything I had that used OpenSSL. First default step for me is to check if DSM has a new release out, then evaluate if I need to do individual package management after that.

So I download 5.0 and install it from the DS211j's web interface in the control panel.

I get one reboot out of the thing during its update, then it says a whole slew of packages need to be updated. SVN, OpenVPN and a whole bunch more. I click on Update All.

I let it sit for several hours while I did other completely unrelated tasks on different computer hardware. I come back to it several hours later and it's locked up. I power off and back on, and it won't allow me to access port 5000 via HTTP nor access via PuTTY/SSH.

I now have a brick. How can I fix this and retain my ~1.75TB of RAID1 data on my device?

I had the same problem with my DS112j today. After the update the DS112j seems bricked. Reset wont work. After installing the second update from the link above I get the following message:

"Fail to update the file. The file is probably corrupt."

Attempts to re-install the 5.0-4458 firmware results in another error message "Unable to reconize system model"

Anyone got a solution for this?

RS214 bricked after updating to Version: 5.0-4458 Update 2

Postby andySF » Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:18 pm

After the update to Version: 5.0-4458 Update 2 my RS214 is stuck at boot I think. The power button is blinking. Anyone updated and have the same issue? How this can be fixed?

Yes I have tried. After a POST like test is going in the same stage where power is blinking. I haven't try to reinstall it by pressing 4 seconds the reset button like the manual says. But I'm not very happy to loose all my data.

Just executed upgrade and now flashing blue light

Postby matthewcb » Thu Apr 10, 2014 1:04 pm

Hi,

As per the title I have installed latest system upgrade and now all I see is a flashing blue light.

The NAS was fine until recently, when the decision to implement fisher-price style blocks and colours stopped the auto-extract on torrents, now the device has failed completely on another 'upgrade'.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Update: now the device has a flashing amber and orange status light. How could Synology have messed up such a good device so much?

Exactly what model do you have and what DSM version were you trying to install?
"Latest system upgrade" means different things, especially if you have an older model.
NAS: DS413 running DSM 5.0
Configuration: SHR, with 1 disk data protection
HDD: 1x3TB, 2x2TB

There are more people (like myself) with this problem in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=232&t=84287

Apologies, just really rather annoyed about this - the second major failure of the Synology within six months so wasn't as clear as I should have been.

I have a DS112j and initiated the upgrade after being prompted to DSM 5.0-4458.

I had the exact same thing happen. I installed Update 2 and now have a blinking light and Synology Assistant cannot find the unit. I have unplugged it and let it boot up and still does not respond to its IP address and Synology Assistant cannot find it. I am using the RS214 as previous stated. What should we do to fix?
