expand to RAID5

Postby norby » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:22 pm

I'll be getting a DS411j in a couple of days and I have 2 drives ready for it
Will probably start with JBOD or RAID0 (but not necessarily) but in 2-3 months, I'll be getting the 3rd (and maybe 4th) drive and I'm planning a switch to RAID5

Can I expand without erasing a drive ? best I came up with is to create 2 volumes, and expanding the 1st volume into a RAID5 array, I will have to erase only one drive

You cannot expand a JBOD partition to RIAD 5.. You can only expand the JBOD partition to a larger one..

RAID 0 might be expandable to RAID 5, but i have not heard about it...
Accourding to this site, it is not possible.. (but it is if you go for RAID 1)..

It is possible to switch between some RAID levels without data loss, however, it is recommended to backup your data before switching between RAID levels, in case something goes wrong..

That was the link I mostly used while planning, but I saw no migration form RAID0
I guess that I'll go with two volumes then...

A RAID0 cant be touched at all.
You can expand a 2 disk JBOD to a 3 or 4 disk JBOD

But both volume types can not be converted to somethng else.
