DS211 JBOD: How to access data without NAS / Not Initialized

Postby mocsta » Wed May 23, 2012 2:04 pm

Hi all,

I had a DS211 (4.2219) configured as JBOD with 1x2TB & 1x3TB.
The DS211 suffered the "flashing light" issue, so I sent it in for warranty repair.

I emailed Synology support; asking how I could access the data from the JBOD drives in Windows 7. They recommended 'Virtual Volumes'. After running this I could access the drives, but within /Volume1, there was only @postfix; I checked all the other folders, but could not locate my data.

Since then, I have purchased a DS411 (Which arrived today). I figured if i put in a fresh drive to update to 4.2219 (to match the DS211), by adding in my 2*JBOD drives, the DS411 would register them successfully.

Instead, Storage Manager/HDD Management detects the two drives, but the status is "NOT INITIALIZED". If I try to create a volume, it says it will erase all content.

Is there anything I can do to save this JBOD data?

If it matters, Synology have replaced my faulty DS211 with a DS212 (yet to arrive).

What status does Synology Assistant tell you?

The DSM is designed to detect volumes from other multiple bay systems. You may ask Synology support if they can remotely mount the volume. Of course creating a new volume will erase your data.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Currently I have 3 drives in the NAS.
1x320GB (used to upgrade firmware to 4.0-2219)
& 1x2TB, 1x3TB (JBOD drives)

Synology Assistant says Status is: Ready; Version: 4.0-2219 (matches DS211 firmware)

In the NAS:
Storage Manager:
Volume 1 - Basic, ext4

HDD Management:
Disk 1 = 2TB, Status: Not Initialized, Volume: -
Disk 2 = 320GB, Status: Normal, Volume: Disk Group 1
Disk 3 = 3TB, Status: Not Initialized, Volume: -

As per the Synology "How to Repair" tutorial, I ran the S.M.A.R.T test on both JBOD drives, and has come back as normal.

I will attempt to configure the NAS for remote access (assign DDNS etc), and then log a ticket for the remote mounting assistance.

Wow!! Worked like a treat. Thank you!!

Put only the 2 JBOD drives in the same order, and booted up the Synology. S. Assistant said the NAS was "migratable" after reinstalling the firmware, everything is Good to Go.

Thanks guys for the feedback, much appreciated.
