Newbie question about external hard drive

Postby paul44birch » Sun May 13, 2012 9:04 pm

OK, just ordered a DS212J and one 2tb hdd. I will be using it for file storage and streaming music and movies. I have only bought one hdd for now, as I already have and external hard drive which I plan to use for back up purposes. Am I correct that I can do this for now without any problems and add a second 2tb hdd at a later date to configure RAID when I reach capacity on my external drive? Seems to make sense to use the external one for now and save some money on the initial purchase. I'm new to this so excuse basic question.

Cheers

Yes, AFAIK this is correct - you can always expand the internal storage of the 212J later by adding a second hard drive (and presumably converting the volume to RAID in the process).

Note however that any external drives can't be part of a RAID array in any way, so they will always be standalone volumes (one for each external drive), available from the NAS as usbshare1, usbshare2 etc.

Thanks Nuke. It is what I thought, but I just needed confirmation from an expert.
