DS211j cannot find HDDs

Postby Bingo » Mon Apr 16, 2012 10:21 pm

DS211j + 2 new HDDs Seagate Barracuda ST2000DL003 (been sleeping in the garage for a while..)

During install I get "No HDD can be found"

***

When starting 211j both HDD1+2-LEDs is static green for some time
When power-LED turns static blue, status-LED blinks green/orange and HDD1+2-LEDs goes black.

***

Both HDDs has been connected to PC via USB/adapter kit.
Both showed up in Win7 Explorer and was formatted to NTFS to check so they're ok.

Same problem both before and after USB-connection/formatting.

Got this from support (haven't had time to try yet, will report back after testing)

Please check there is not external device plug on the diskstation. Please use latest Synology Assistant to install, you can download it in our Download Center.
http://www.synology.com/support/download.php?lang=enu

It might to be two factor to cause this issue.

1. disk is damaged.
2. disk slot on its main board is damaged.

Please also refer this FAQ to format partition on these new disks.
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_sho ... 6&lang=enu

We recommend you to take out the hard disk(s) and connect it (them) to your PC, then use the official diagnostic tools below to Full / Extended test (not suggest using quick test) and check if the hard disk(s) is fine:

[Seagate HDD: Seatool]
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/suppor ... s/seatools

Please install one disk in another slot to see if it is recognized, you can try to swap disk in different slot.

If disks are fine but can't recognized onto diskstation (after done formatting partition and checking), please direct contact local vendor/reseller to RMA it.

Hope this helps.

I followed what support told me, but no luck. HDDs can be found when connected to computer via USB, but NAS says it can't find any disks.

I tried using another HD, ST9500325AS, and install was smooth.

In minor desperation I ordered new HDDs, 2 x ST3000DM001, but when trying to install NAS says it can't find any disks....

I also tried installing with just 1 HDD, with same result...

My translation from swedish to english of the error-message would be:

No harddisk found. Make sure the harddisk is connected to the motherboard.

If your installing via WiFi, switch to ethernet-cable for both your DiskStation and your PC-client and make another try.

An error happened during installation. The Telnet-service is activated to identify the problem. Configure your router to forward port 23 to DiskStation and contact Synology Online Support

What to do now?

Have you tried to wipe every partition from those HDDs?

The disks came straight from the bag into Diskstation, so I assumed they would be "clean".
Will check them and wipe everything I eventually find

Hi, I´m new with this forum, located in good old Germany.
Same issue with me as Bingo described. Purchased new DS211j and one (compatible) WD 20EARX / 2TB today and tried to set up under Mac OS 10.7.3, DS connected to a Fritz!Box 6360 Cable. HD is properly inserted in slot 1. Orange status light blinks and indicates "Volume degraded or crashed/No volume". On proceeding with installation assistant same error message occurs and looks somewhat cryptical to me.
Are there no helping hands around?

I have exactly the same problem as you guys, but with a DS212j. And I also use a WD 20EARX / 2TB. I returned mine and got a new one, but that did not work. I think there is something wrong with the compability of the HDD, cant see what else it could be.

@Happa-
Oops, sorry, mine is also a DS212j.
- I had that WD20EARX mentioned recommended by my retailer,
- and it is on the positive compatibility-list, so recommended by Synology also.
In the end, I presume some bug in the firmware and/or in the compatibility testing. What are we naive customers recommended now?

Hello,

We have resolved all three issues via our Support Ticket system.

Bingo is undergoing the RMA process for possible hardware issue.

DrDiMue returned the unit to his reseller for service, and from his private
message, the dealer "completely wiped out the harddisk before
accessing via DSM." It works perfectly fine now.

Happa was using WD20EARS, not a EARX, and he solved the issue by
installing with a spare disk.

As a reminder, everyone's issue will be different and this is a User Forum.
We would appreciate it if users can submit a support ticket for proper, individualized assistance.

Daniel
