Convert RAID 5 to non-RAID?

Postby vinceg » Sat Mar 31, 2012 9:46 am

I have two DS410s, each with four 2TB drives, formatted as RAID 5 (~5.4TB usable). As they both became pretty full, I recently put together an 1812+ with seven 3TB drives, formatted as SHR (1 redundant disk -- 16TB usable). I've copied all of my data over to the 1812 from the 410s. I'd now like to use the 410s as backup but want to remove the RAID 5 structure so that I can get more usable space (8TB each).

Is there a way to do that in place or do I need to just bite the bullet and recreate each volume on the 410s as non-RAID and do the brute force copy back from the 1812?

thx, Vince

No, there is no way to unraid a RAID5 volume. You have to remove the volume and recreate it. Data will be lost.
