Setup Wizard did not find any network

Postby Relapse » Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:26 pm

I installed a new DS106J with an old 2.5GB HDD and plugged it into an ethernet port on a D-Link MIMO G624M Wireless ADSL Router. When I autorun the Synology Installation disk, I get an error message saying "Setup Wizard did not find any network. Make sure you are connected to a network and try again."

I have seen the drive listed on the router's DHCP web interface and entered its address in the browser's address bar, but it does not bring up the DS's web interface. I also told the firewell to grant access to the DSAssistant.exe application, and I saw the DS in the firewall's network map (although Mcafee Internet Security Centre 2007 mentioned that it needed some Mcafee application installed on it in order to monitor its protection status). Security on the wireless connection is temporarily disabled.

The LEDs on the DS front panel show power and lan are working, but the status LED is solid amber, indicating that the disk is not formatted, even though I formatted it with NTFS file system prior to installing it. I am running Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and have a Belkin 108g+ network adapter card.

Any help in getting me started with this will be much appreciated. The few previous posts I found on the same topic seem to have been unresolved.

I might be wrong here, so feel free to correct me if I'm telling lies...

Are You sure that NTFS is supported? I presumed that NFS is the used partition type?
Have You tried to format the disk from within the DS' own interface?

EDIT: Sorry, just read you post more closely. You need to get the web-interface working first... *doh* My bad... :)

EDIT EDIT: Try disabling all firewalls on your PC if possible.
Both McAfee and Windows' own (if enabled).
McAfee caused me a few problems, and I ended up just using the bulit-in FW in Windows XP.

Firewall surely is not the cause

Postby Relapse » Sun Apr 01, 2007 10:05 pm

I tried turning the firewall off, but the network was still not detected by the DS setup utility and nor was there any success from typing the DS network address plus :5000 in the browser address field.

The DS will not respond to port 5000 if there is no OS installed.

Some thoughts for you
Make sure all security software is disabled on your computer.

Try connecting the DS directly to your computer to get it setup. Try using another LAN cable. Note, the DS will format any HDD that is installed inside of it, our systems use the ext3 File System.

Setup utility enabled by attaching DS106 to PC directly

Postby Relapse » Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:55 pm

I connected the DS directly to the PC and it resolved the problem of the DS Assistant setup utility failing to discover it on the network. The drive can now be formatted with the correct file-system before being reattached to the network via the wireless router.

Thanks to Franklin for this advice.

Windows workgroup name causing non-discovery of Diskatation

Postby Relapse » Sat Apr 07, 2007 11:22 am

Having reconnected the DS106 to the wireless router, I was able to connect to its interface through the web browser on port 5000, but using the setup utility CD still did not work.

I then recalled that setting up a mixed OS network at my place of work necessitated changing the name of the Windows workgroup because Windows XP Home and Vista Business call the default workgroup by different names, which means that the devices look for each other in the wrong place.

I checked the name of the workgroup in 'Control Panel>Systems and Maintenance>System' and saw that I had personalised the name of the workgroup on my home PC, which runs Vista Home. After I updated this information on the Diskstation, the Diskstation became visible in the network section of the Windows control panel.

Synology software applications not finding network or server

Postby Relapse » Sat Apr 07, 2007 7:57 pm

Although I can now access folders and the web interface of the DS106J and Windows can see it, I still need to use the software utilities, particularly Data Replicator II. If anyone can tell me why the software fails to find a network or discovers no server, I would be very grateful.

If you are using DRII on WinVista, you will need to use version 0082

http://www.synology.com/enu/support/bet ... 0-0082.php

Please explain in more detail of how DRII is not able to discover the server. What OS environment are you using? Wired? Wireless? If you are using wireless, have you tried wired?

I am having the exact same problem: I am too using Vista Business with a Belkin USB WLAN adapter. The system itself is a DELL.

The Synology Assistant can not find a network interface, however the network on the machine is in fact properly working.

Has anyone yet found a solution to that problem?

I really think that we have a Vista compatibility issue here.

@Relapse: did it work with DRII version 0082?

Synology Assistant 456 is available on our firmware downloads site, feel free to download it via the link in my signature. Please try disable User Account Control to verify that SynoAssist is able to browse the local network.

Synology Assistant found server on network

Postby Relapse » Sun Apr 22, 2007 2:10 pm

I installed Version: v2.0.3 - 0458 of Synology Assistant and turned off 'user account control' (UAC) from user accounts whilst logged in as an administrator. Now the search for a server is enabled and the Synology Assistant no longer reports a failure to find a network.

Unfortunately, I could not say whether it was the 0458 update or switching off UAC that solved the problem because I tried both at the same time. I suspect UAC was the source of the problem. After turning UAC back on, Synology Assistant was still able to search the network for a server, so this is not a Vista compatibility problem, but rather a Vista awkwardness issue.
