CS407 keeps crashing disk 1.

Postby Hobbz » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:54 pm

Hi

I just bought a CS407 witch is loaded with 4 WD WD10EACS 1TB disks running raid 5, a great product no doubt, but it is giving me a little grief.
Sometime the system hangs and i can see that the Disk 1 LED is flashing while the others are constant, sometimes it resumes after a couple of minutes, other times it crashes the disk, starts beeping and tells me that Volume 1 is degraded, i use the repair function and it's up and running again... this just dosent seem like a viable situation ... Smart test on the disk says it's okay ...

Any ideas ?

Is it posible to swap Disk 1 and 2 around without loosing data ?

Thanks
Hobbz

No, you cant just swap disk 1 and disk 2 ( you mean replace disk 1 by disk2 and disk 2 by disk 1?).

But you can replace disk 1 by a new one, repair the RAID5, and then replace disk 2 by a new one (or by disk 1) and repair RAID5 again.

Bugger

Well now i have removed Disk 1 and is in the process of testing and zeroing the disk.
Then i will reinstall it and see if the problem persists.

I am having a similar problem. I got a report that the RAID5 volume had degraded, and that Disk1 had crashed.

I had a spare drive on hand so removed Disk1 and put in the replacement.

I chose the Repair option for the Volume and ~12 hours later I get the same warning.

I rebooted the CubeStation again (chosing Restart from the web interface did not seem to work so I powered down).

I chose Repair Volume again and ~12 hours later the same error.

The original drive that was reported as crashed has been wiped and scanned for errors. None were found.

Any ideas/suggestions?

After some advice from support i swapped the SATA cable for Disk 1, for a new one ... this seems to have worked .... it has been running for about 5 days now without incident ... it's worth a shot ....

Did you find a SATA cable of the right length? If so from where?

Faulty SATA cable?! I'm having a very similar issue, Disk 1 failed, replaced disk and again failed, Western Digital's diagnostic tools reported no problems with either disk. I've got a few spare SATA cables so I'll also give this ago in my 407.

Faulty SATA cable is interesting given that Synology support have diagnosed my problem as a faulty SATA controller (from the log error messages). I would imagine that a faulty SATA cable could possibly cause problems that appear to be caused by a faulty SATA controller (and vice versa).

Replaced SATA cable and NAS is running ok for 12 plus hours now with the same disk that crashed twice (last crash occured about 20 minutes into a repair), this time rebuild completed without issue. :D Fingers crossed.

I have 4 Seagate ST3500641AS 500GB Hard Drives and Disk 1 has failed 4 times now. I have replaced the drive each time and I even sent one of the drives back to Seagate to be repaired and it even crashed again when I put back in my system. It's always Disk 1 that crashes. I will try replacing the SATA cable and see if I continue to have issues but my system was running for many months until problem started.

 Just lost HDD 4 now.... Same errors in the log, repair failed.... I'll swap the SATA cable on drive 4 also. This is getting beyond a joke, worst money i ever spent at the moment, it's down more than it's up.

Again replacement cable has resolved the issue. They either need to not include the SATA cables or use better quality cables....

My status is waiting on a set of replacement cables from Synology.

I did put in a replacement SATA cable (plundered from a desktop machine) but that wasn't a smashing success. Instead of having the RAID5 array degraded but accessible, now I cannot access the CS at all. Not even the web interface.

I am with you Retiarius. This has been a very frustrating experience and I have been looking at alternative NAS solutions with interest.

I think the CS407 is a product with a great feature set, which fit into my home network/entertainment plans very nicely, but mine has been spending far too much time as a highly featured and expensive paperweight.

Same problem as above (disk 1 always which normally is Volume 1).

Where are you getting your replacement cables from? How do I go about getting some replacements?

Mike
