DS212j keeps crashing

Postby GiddyUpHorsey » Sun Apr 08, 2012 6:49 pm

I've just received my new DS212j a day ago and have set it up and started transferring my data over to it, but it keeps crashing randomly multiple times throughout the day. When it crashes I hear a beep and the blue light on the front of the device is flashing.

In the system log it says: "System booted up from an improper shutdown".
I get an email notification that says: "DiskStation suffered from power failure and was shut down improperly."

The DiskStation is plugged into a UPS along with other devices that are working normally. I doubt that power failure is the real issue here.

I've logged a support ticket, but no reply yet.

Anyone know what could be the problem here?

It just happened again. Probably about the 15th time since purchase. It hasn't even been in my possession for 48 hours yet.

I noticed that the two disk lights were flashing yellow and the blue power light was flashing. After about a minute the device beeps and then it boots up.

When I log into DSM the Storage Manager shows the volume as resynchronizing.

Do you have the UPS connected to your DS212j?

I would suspect the NAS is thinking it's about to lose power for some reason.

You could try using a different UPS, idea being that there is an issue with the one you have.

You might simply bypass using a UPS, plug into the wall, (suggest you keep a surge protector though).

Otherwise, if you're savoy, what's it say in the /var/log/messages file at that time?

How do I check var/log/messages?

I don't know Linux well.

I've managed to connect using PuTTY for Windows but can't see a var directory. Using su or sudo to try an log on as root doesn't work.

Ok, I managed to figure out how to view the messages.

Here is the log spanning the time of the last crash and reboot. I received an email from the DiskStation at 15:28. I don't know much about Linux, but to me the log just looks like a boot sequence, nothing stands out to me as the cause of the crashes.

WOW man... I literally just purchased the exact same combo of hardware off of amazon a couple hours ago...

If I run into anything, I will let you know!

I have the same problem but with a different setup. DSM 4.0, 2 x 2 TB Samsung DH204UI in RAID -1 mode, external 1,5 TB WD USB drive. Reboots with mentioned error message approx. once every hour under no load at all. Maybe the USB device is causing it? I'll try to disconnect it to see wether it helps or not.

I had moved my DS212j to another power socket on my UPS but was still getting crashes.

Then I moved it to just a surge protector and also moved the device away from the other computers it was sitting next to (they get quite hot). I've now managed to get 37.5 hours uptime with no crashes.

I'm wondering if:
* The UPS is faulty
* The DS212j is very sensitive to its power source
* The DS212j is very sensitive to heat

I'm going to power it down and plug it back into the UPS, but leave it in the same location. Hopefully this should give some indication of whether it's the heat or being plugged into the UPS that is causing the crashes.

I finally got a response from Synology. They asked me to send them the debug.dat file, but I've not heard from them since.

After unplugging the External USB - device (which has it's own power source) my DS212j has been running without issues for 24 hours now. I'm not using an UPS so I think you can rule that one out. Your other two suggestions regarding sensitivy sounds reasonable considering my experiences. Let's see what the Synology has to say about it.

I have connected my USB-device again with out any issues occurring for a couple of days now. I'm starting to suspect that the power failure was caused by the station overheating. My hard discs were re-synchronizating (preparing for RAID-1) and I was copying files between them and the USB-device when it happened. As soon as the re-synch process finished I could copy files between the drives with out any hazzle.

Having moved the DiskStation away from other computers, I'd had uptime of 7 days. I decided to plug in my external HDD and got two crashes within ten minutes of each other.

I'm convinced that the DiskStation is not very heat tolerant and that there are some defects in DSM 4 related to USB devices.

Same issue here with brand new DS212j I bought this week. It managed to unexpectedly shutdown two times already within 2 days when I was copying files from my desktop to it. Don't understand the reason of it. Thanksfully I can send the diskstation back if this keeps happening.

Re: DS212j keeps crashing

Postby Ujeen » Sun Apr 22, 2012 10:23 am

I reported the issue to the Synology support as it seems the synology guys don't realy care about reading this forum. (Hate to say that but if I don't have this solved in 3-4 days I'll have to take the ds212j back before the two week of my trial period ends).

Because this is declared to be a user forum! If you need personal assistance by Sonology staff, submit a support form as you obviously already did.

A few of things to check for:

Keep other equipment 3-4 inches (8-10 cm) away from the sides of the DiskStation (especially if that other equipment has side air intake, for its sake).

Make sure there's nothing blocking the front or the back of the Diskstation for a good 12 inches (30 cm) or so. You don't want anything blocking the intake or exhaust of the DiskStation or the fans of other equipment creating higher pressure behind the it.

Make sure the hot exhaust of other equipment can't be drawn into the front of the DiskStation.
