CNID database?

Hi there,

first of, I've read the other threads about this issue, but they all appear to be related to the DSM 3.2 beta and to TimeMachine.

Neither of which apply in my case. I haven't set up a TimeMachine location (and actually don't intend to) and my DSM is 3.2-2018, the version the DS got delivered with. I haven't yet updated the DSM because my DS always tells me that there's insufficient capacity for the update. Dunno what that's supposed to mean. First off, there's about 2TB available on the data volume and second, isn't the system partition a separate "drive" inside the DS?

Anyhow, I'm constantly getting the CNID DB error when I try to access the shared folders on my DS over AFP.

"Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using temporary CNID DB instead.Check server messages for details. Switching to read-only mode."

The only thing that helps eventually is to eject and re-connect the DS manually a couple of times which is rather annoying, and actually not what I was hoping for when I opted for Synology instead of other vendors.
Actually manually mounting the shared folders wasn't really what I was looking for. Is there a way to auto mount the volumes? I'm aware of setting the shares in the autostart items of OS X, but that turned out to be rather unreliable in the past. Maybe with iSCSI (don't really know anything about that to be honest, but will have a look into that if thats the solution) or something like that?

If anyone's got a fix or any helpful information regarding both these issues, please enlighten me cause I'm kinda fishing in the dark here.

Since upgrading to DSM 4.0 I occasionally get the following error message after mounting a share from the Disktation on my desktop (Mac OS X 10.7.4). "Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using temporary CNID DB instead.".

I have had this appear under 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 as well. I have an iMac 27" from 2010, and connect to the Synology 409+ via a gigabit ethernet network (replaced all cables) with just the Synology and the iMac on a D-Link Gigabit switch for maximum speed.

Recently I am under the impression that AFP files sharing speeds have dropped as well. So last week I completely re-installed my Diskstation (factory settings, reformat array, load newest firmware and restore (file by file) all content from USB backups. Took several days.... At first connect, the dreaded CNID database error showed up again.... I now had high hopes for Mac OS X 10.7.4, but the CNID errors remain....

Can anyone help?

Frank, I automount as you describe via the Startup items. There is another way via AppleScript (saw that somewhere when I searched Google for this CNID error), but I have not tried it.

Connecting via iSCSI I have not tried either, but I understand if you do this, you cannot use the Disktation simultaneously from several Macs. It basically becomes a 'direct' connection, a bit like USB or Firewire.

I hope Synology update their firmware to fix this CNID problem!
