I recently switched from a DROBO to a 1511+ and have to say, I'm impressed by speed, performance, usability and security. I was a little shocked, when I realized that I can't searc with spotlight. So, I searched the forum and what I found so far doesn't make me happy, yet. I haven't tried all suggestions so far, but what I tried failed.
What I tried so far and what I think about it:
Search via DSM:
Really not fast enough and I have to do two searches – on my local Mac drives (4TB) and the 1511.
Once, the Index is done, the search is good and fast. But first, I don't really get the Idea of Launchbar and it start's indexing for quite a while every restart. I cant't search while indexing.
Easy Find: http://www.devontechnologies.com/products/freeware.html
If it only would have an Index, then it would be great! Now, it's to slow for all my files.
What I want to try now, but befor I waste to much time I'd like to ask if someone tried it and have any suggestions:
- Mount via NFS (I'm not a real tekkie, that's why I like my Mac's. They just work and I'm fine with afp).
- Using Terrier http://terrier.org/ which looks interesting but I hav no Idea if ot will work.
- Using CD-Finder http://www.cdfinder.de/index.html which looks most interesting since you can store a catalog which indexes all (!) your files on all PC's/Macs/DVDs etc. The catalog can even be on the Synology and accessed from everywhere. But it's € 149,- for a two users license...
Any more suggestions?
Thany you for your time and your help.
P.S.: While researching I stepped over http://www.alfredapp.com/ as e enhancement for Spotlight. Very nice!
