MS office and Home share

Postby gnyf » Tue Jun 28, 2011 8:28 pm

Using a NAS with a Mac.
I can not open a office (word, excel) from a HOME share ie HOME/file.docx but the same file accessed as HOMES/userJoe/file.docx opens with no problems

Other files like pdf has no problem so I wonder if this is a DSM or an MS issue?

Any suggestions

Yep just noticed the same today. Really really annoying. Cant create or open any MS Office document from the HOME Share on either of my Mac's (10.6.8 or 10.7). File opens fine if i cooy to desktop, copy to another share or use quickview.
using DSM 3.2

I suspect this happens because /home is also an existing directory on every unix (and thus MAC) system. So when you select a file from within an office application, the returned file path is actually "mapped" to the internal home directory. I also noticed this only happens in Office. Opening a PDF for instance is no problem at all. So it is really an Office fault, but it could be solved when you were allowed to choose a different share name for home in DSM.

Same here too. Attempting to open any Office file from the home share using MS Office 2008 for Mac results in an error. Either stating that the file is read-only or corrupted. However, if the same file is copied to a local drive or another non-home share - the file opens without issue.
I'm not convinced that this is necessarily an issue with the drive mapping as Mac OS volumes are mounted as /Volumes/ShareName so home would be /Volumes/home but there's definatley some issue there.
Interestingly, OpenOffice (tested with v3.3) doesn't seem to exhibit this problem.
My Macs running lion & to be honest I'm not sure whether this issue was introduced by the Lion upgrade or DSM 3.2 beta :?

I do think it has something to do with the /home folder not being mapped correctly.

If you have rights on the /homes folder on the Synology, you can open the Office documents by going via the /homes/username/... folder. Then it just works.

koenb85,
You're correct, I just tried mounting the volume using the admin account and as you said - you can browse through the homes folder and open office docs no problem.
Cheers

MS Office 2011 excell gifs the message "Read Only" on the D209+ with MacBook, with Windows 7 and MS Office it will open like expected.
The same problem with Adobe Elements Organizer 10. After it loads the photo's the connection with the photo is lost. When you copy the database of Adobe to the NAS you will get the message "Read Only". Also on the Windows 7 computer not a problem.

What is the problem between the Mac and NAS?

I just ran in to this problem?

Did you guys find any solution for this problem?

Office 2004 for Mac and Office 2011 for Mac cannot save or access files in user home folder. LibreOffice / OpenOffice , Textedit etc. they all work just fine.

If I move files out of the user folder into normal share Office 2004/2011 can access the files OK.

Well, since the problem appeared last year, we had:
-3 updates for Mac OSX 10.7 to 10.7.3
-some Updates for MS Office 2011 to 14.2.1
-DSM 4 with some minor updates

but the problem still persists.
So who is responsible? Apple, Synology, Microsoft? Synology, any words on this?
Can we expect any fix any time or do we have to live with this situation, that the home-Share for AFP is working well but not with MS Office? This is really annoying.
