MP3 to one device, FLAC to another - possible?

Postby edgayton » Mon May 14, 2012 4:20 pm

I have all my music stored on my DS212j running DSM4.0 I have all of it in MP3 as encoded by iTunes and most of it stored again as FLAC. Now I want to serve FLAC to my PS3 (or anything on my home network as it's fast enough) but to serve MP3 to, for example, my phone or a remote computer over the internet as FLAC is too big for the available upstream bandwidth.

However, if I allow the Media Index program to index both libraries, then all the devices will list every song twice, once as MP3 and once as FLAC. Is there any way to tell the phone only to see MP3s and the PS3 only to see FLACs, ie to have two separate music libraries?

Any help/thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting idea. I think one would need to make a sort of "device filter." I've never heard about such a thing before, but probably useful to many people.

Assuming your DiskStation supports transcoding (not all do), all you need are the FLAC files. The DS Audio app (at least on iOS) will let you choose to have the files transcoded to WAV or MP3 (as will Audio Station when the remote computer/browser doesn't support FLAC). I am speaking theoretically here, since I don't have any FLAC material.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not sure that my Diskstation does support transcoding being a lowly DS212j. Certainly when I look in the options of the Android App I can't see any way to turn this on. I'll have a look on the iPad later to see if that app gives any more options.
