Synology Internet Radio Stations without the middle man

Postby NeilB » Sat May 12, 2012 4:08 pm

Hi

I've recently purchased a DS411Slim and I've installed DSM 4.0 on it, specifically 4.0-2219.

I have a pure Sirocco 550 Hifi which can "see" the DS as a media server and happily plays all the music I've placed on its discs.

I have also enabled the "Internet Radio" flag in Audio Station and indeed, the radio station lists from the Synology appear on the 550, but selecting them does not emit any sound.

Reading through the docs (oh yes, I did a bit), it says that you need to enable UPnP browsing to listen to the Internet Radio stations.

The problem, so far as I can tell, is that the Sirocco 550 is logging in as "guest" and there is no way to set UPnP browsing for the guest user, and no way to get the Sirocco 550 to login as a named user.

So has anyone managed to get a Sirocco 550 (or any Pure internet radio) to play the Synology internet radio stations?

I can listen to them, but only if I'm logged into the audio station via my computer, and output the audio to an Aux-in on the Sirocco. This is the "middle man" in my topic that I would like to remove.

TIA.

Regards
Neil

This means it is a digital media "player" (pulls media from a digital media "server").

But is it also a digital media "renderer" (accepts pushed media from a DMS)?

In Audio Station, above the album cover art in the player section, change Streaming Mode to Media Renderer. A menu should appear below the playback controls that says "Please select a media renderer." Do you see the 550 there? If so, it is also a DMR.

BTW, doesn't that unit play Internet Radio by itself?

No, that note is for Audio Station users ability to scan for other media servers on the network.

DLNA doesn't use user accounts, it just provide media description and content for those that scan for it using that protocol. Media Server/DLNA is not the same as the Audio Station application.
I have also enabled the "Internet Radio" flag in Audio Station

The setting you're referring to here is the Media Server (DLNA) settings.

That is likely because of the radio station streaming format is not compatible - some may be, some may not. I've seen this also when using various other media player clients towards Diskstation.

That's what I'm seeing, too.

Thanks both for your responses.

So I tried seeing if the 550 was recognised as a media renderer. It wasn't. So it looks as if I'll have to rely on the middle man unless I can find the same stations in The Pure Lounge.

I didn't purchase the DS for its Internet radio ability, just hoped it was possible.

As for the 550, it is only UPnP capable, not DLNA capable which probably accounts for this.

So, I'll have to hunt the Pure Lounge for any stations I find via the media player, or put up with the middleman.

In DMA Compatibility options of Media Server, in Device List dialog, you could try changing the profile of that device to "Generic Non-DLNA" possibly.
