Can Audio Station stream FLAC

Postby pierreontheair » Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:57 pm

Hello,

I was just wondering what is the status about streaming FLAC files from Audio Station (so called Media Server mode of Audio Station) ? I know it was not supporter in previous versions of DSM. Would it be supported in DSM 4.0 by any chance ?

Thanks,

Pierre

Well, for those interested, the answer seems to be YES.

I have just installed DSM 4.0, and can now stream my FLAC files from Audio Station to my NAD C446. Using the DS Audio app for Ipad/Iphone makes it for a very nice interface, much better than PlugPlayer (It does not stop playing when you Iphone/Ipad goes to sleep !)
Now, the only question is whether this is true bit for bit streaming; hopefully the file is not converted on the way (I have not actived transcoding). On its screen, my NAD shows the file playing as a .flac one, so would indicate the NAD actually receives the original FLAC file.
I hope this helps others, give it a try; really much better than using Media Server and then controlling with PlugPlayer.

Hello
I also looking for the same answers.
In addition, I was wondering if using the Airplay interface to stream Flac to a NAD is loosing quality ... or not.

My config :
Syno 211J
B&W Zeppelin Air
Flac files

Thanks,
Axel

It does play FLAC, I don't think it does at full quality when using Apple Airplay though. I tried a little experiment by pulling the network cable out of the NAS while it was playing a FLAC file. The music wasn't interrupted, indicating that the music was cached onto the ipad. At that time I had no apps to play FLAC files so I would have to conclude that the ipad must have converted the file as it cached it.

Hope this helps some!!

Mick.
