User permissions

Postby dvizard » Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:19 pm

Hi,

We use our DS411 mainly as a file and directory server in a NFS/LDAP setting. Workstations are connected to the Directory Server on the Synology and mount the NFS shares with the user directories.

In NFS, user permissions work as intended. However, when we try to access files via the FileStation, there are only 2 cases. 1) the user has admin permissions on the Synology; in this case, the user has access to all files and directories on the Synology via FileStation. I believe this is as intended. 2) the user is a normal user; in this case the user sees just the "root" folders with no subfolders and no files at all. This is regardless of whether the user is a local user or a LDAP (Directory Server) user; in both cases the user sees nothing. This is true not only for the home directories, but also for the remaining publicly accessible shares.

The tested users have the application permission for "File Station" set, so this shouldn't be the issue.

Do you have any ideas why this problem might arise? We want to use File Station to provide access to our files e.g. for users accessing the system remotely via VPN.

Not sure if this is related but every account is part of the <users> group so you need to ensure that the <users> have access or are at least not prevented, ie. no specific privilege is set for the related shared folder(s). If you set the <users> account with <no access> to a folder then nobody can access it, at least in my experience that's the way it works.
