PS3 and ISO Files

Postby aha1973 » Thu Apr 05, 2012 8:32 pm

Hi,

I have just recieved my 212j and I was really excited to be able to play iso files without conversion on my iPhone. However I've tried on PS3 and I can't view any of the iso files. The PS3 is reporting corrupted data.

Is anyone able to watch iso files on teh PS3?

Thanks,
Aha

The strange thing is that if I use PS3 Media server the iso files are played, which is very confusing.

You cant play ISO files through DLNA. What PS3 Media Server was doing is extracting the video stream from the ISO disc image then providing that to the PS3. All the PS3 was seeing was a .vob video.

The Synology server does not support this extraction function, if you want the movie to play on the PS3 you will need to run VOB2MPG which will extract the movie to a .mpg container.

Then I can't understand why can I play my iso file on Apple TV using XBMC? Who is doing the extraction? Apple TV?

Does Airplayer also have the capability to extact the iso files and see them as vob?

XBMC plays .iso images normally from any NAS through SMB which is the way your supposed to play them. If your doing it through UPnP then XBMC is a very rare special case, it only works with Synology UPnP server and XBMC nothing else, there's no extraction process it's native support.

No idea, Airplayer isnt DLNA and needs to transcode video to H.264 in order to play on Apple devices which the NAS wont be able to do in the first place.

Using iso disc images on any platform that doesn't natively support them is a bad idea. If you want PS3/iPhone compatibility you will need to convert the videos into H.264/MP4 videos.
