DS Windows file sharing stopped working

Postby bonnysparks » Wed Apr 11, 2012 11:01 am

Hi,

I am just trying to figure out why my DS212+ behaved in a particular manner.

It has been working fine as a file server with both mac and windows 7 clients. I could browse and map network drives. Suddenly it stopped me logging on from the windows client and no mapped drives would work. I restarted the DS and restarted windows file sharing service. Still no joy. I had to go into the firewall settings on the ds and allow cif port 445. It is now working.

I'm just interested in the behaviour. Why did it suddenly stop working. Why did it not allow the relavent port when restarting the windows file sharing service.

The only thing I can think of is I did install the latest dsm 4 and I did start a schedule where the DS would shut down at night.

Any thoughts as it is annoying that I have spent a couple housrs sorting this out this morning when I have many other things to do running my business.

I am having the exact same issue with my DS212j. Windows sees the NAS in the Workgroup but I can't map any network drives (either manually or using the Synology Assistant). I have tried both using the NAS name and IP address. I am also on the latest DSM 4.0-2198. I have been trying for a week to get this working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a DS211j which has worked without any fault. I have recently updated to DSM4.0 and changed to a BT Home Hub3 I have 5 laptops all with windows 7 all backing up data without fault. In the network folder on the laptops the diskstation shows up as a media device but not as a storage device anymore. I need to access this a I use it for storing all my pictures, videos and music for all users to access. I can get to the file station via the Synology Assistant but not directly via the network folder as I always have done. I have tried changing all sorts of settings but now don't know what i have or haven't changed. If I wanted to reset the settings to the default without losing any files on the diskstation can this be done by pressing the reset button at the back of the diskstation above the power socket will this work? Any other suggestions would be of great help.

I have just updated to latest DSM 4.0-2219 still not showing up on network folder.

Hey Newtonsdad,

My DS212 just started to do the same thing this week. It ran the backup last weekend but now windows 7 doesn't see it anymore. Cannot map the drive and it shows up as a media device only.

Has anyone figured out why this is?

I have the same issue, but it occurred after I followed the Synology tutorial on securing your server on the internet. I believe that after I created a new admin user and disabled the default admin user (as the tutorial suggested doing), my mapped diskstation drive in Win7 stopped working. After re-enabling it, the connections to the mapped drives resumed.

So my question is, how to I change it so that Windows look for my new username and password when mapping the DS?

Update: Ok, so I ran 'control keymgr.dll' in Windows and sorted out the password issue and my mapped network worked once again.
