read/write? errors when After Effects rendering on the NAS

ok - this stuff is very specific to a certain situation. and bizarre, i might add.

it's like this - rendering over mapped network drives with After Effects to from a synology box (1511+), there's random errors that sometimes cause AE to abort with error, like this:
http://www.pipelinefx.com/forum/index.php?topic=812.0

and sometimes they just produce faulty (flash) frames in the target video file. this is a big render, so let's say over the course of 5 hour render of 20k frames, there's maybe 10 flash frames. don't know if they're caused by faulty write or a faulty read.

this started happening when i went from 411+ to 1511+; and has been driving me bonkers for the past several months.

rendering over network on another win7 box works without a glitch, so likely the problem is not in the network switch or cabling.

We have the same problem with this config:

Synology DS1812+ with 8 Caviar Green and RAID 6
Various DELL clients with windows 7

When clients launch a render on a windows server 2003 share all works fine, but where launch it on the ds after some time get the error "file not found" ad freeze all the pc.

Do you have found a solution?

i've seen what you see, too. but less so if i reboot the render box before starting the render.

actually i'm currently suspecting that win7 is at fault, not the synology box. for me the upgrade of the render box to win7-64 happened around the same time as i swapped NASes.

i suspect win7 because i was finally getting a similar error while rendering over the network from/to a win7 workstation, not the synology NAS. errors were much less frequent, but they did happen.

so i think something is sick deep in the guts of win7, where the OS fails to allocate sufficient resources to the network subsystem while under extreme load such as is the case during AE renders. so for now i've resorted to moving the render source/target files to a local drive on the render box. waste of time, but no errors.

hope this helps. do post back if you figure out more about what's going on.

Do you have tried the option "Optimize CIFS database operations"?

I have read something about this and seems that enable it permit more performance on single access to a file.

Another info on the system, the switch is an gigabit HP 1810-48G, with lag support active on DS ports and CAT 6 cable. No problem on performance or stability coping files and folders.

We have bought two DS 1810+ for this type of work (video render), and I hope that someone of synology support team can help us!
